PASCO, Wash. -- Cougar sophomore Bernard Lagat won his second cross country
race of the fall while Washington State's men claimed their second straight
team title Saturday during the Big Cross Invitational.
Washington State's five scorers were among the top nine runners, giving the
Cougars a team score of 21. This marked the first time WSU's men earned the
Big Cross team title. Southern Utah finished second with 50 points,
followed by Portland with 66 points, Washington with 83, Idaho with 147,
Eastern Washington with 178 and Gonzaga with 201.
Lagat won the men's 8,000-meter race by 33 seconds with a time of 24
minutes, 17 seconds. Teammate Jon Murray was second at 24:50 and Brad Treat
was third at 25:03.
In the opening race, Oregon's women (30 points) squeezed by both Washington
(40) and Washington State (59). Marie Davis of Oregon turned in the winning
5,000-meter time of 17:47. WSU's Kristin Ritzenthaler (18:16) and Kimberly
Schmolka (18:17) finished fifth and sixth respectively.
