Cougars Post Perfect Victories at Idaho Invitational

MOSCOW, Idaho -- For the first time on record, the Washington State men's and women's cross country squads each posted perfect team scores of 15 points to claim titles during the Idaho Invitational Friday evening at the UI Golf Course.
Cougar runners filled the top six spots in both races with senior Kristin Ritzenthaler and sophomore Bernard Lagat claiming individual crowns.
Ritzenthaler (Gorlitz, Germany) edged junior teammate Kimberly Schmolka (Port Orchard, Wash.) by one second with a winning time of 14 minutes, 55.7 seconds in the women's 2.5 mile race.
Lagat (Nandi, Kenya) cruised to an 18-second victory as he covered the men's four-mile course in 20:08. Senior Rasto Kiplangat (Liftin, Kenya) was second in 20:36.7 and junior transfer Jon Murray was third in 20:38.2.
The previous best team scores on record for the men came at the 1986 Idaho Invitational when the Cougars filled spots No. 2-6 for a team total of 16 points. The previous best for the women, 18 points, came at the 1987 Whitman Invitational was WSU runners finished No. 1-4 with the fifth runner in eighth place overall.
This year's Idaho meet was scored as duals only with WSU picking up a clean sweep in scoring with Idaho, Gonzaga and Portland State.
