Feb. 26, 2013

NEW ORLEANS -- Washington State University runner Todd Wakefield has been named to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) 2012 Division I All-Academic Cross Country Team and the Cougar men's team was named an All-Academic Team.

Wakefield, a redshirt sophomore from Kearns, Australia, is one of 67 male student-athletes from 40 institutions to earn the national academic honor and the only representative from the Pac-12 Conference. He is majoring in movement studies at WSU and has a 3.29 grade point average. Last fall Wakefield was the first Cougar to cross the finish line at the NCAA West Regional meet, taking 14th place over with a 10,000m time of 30:01. He earned All-Region honors for his finish. He was an at-large competitor at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, running the 10k course in a time of 30:50.70 (111th).

The Washington State men's cross country team is one of two Pac-12 member schools named a USTFCCCA 2012 Cross Country All-Academic Team. A total of 145 teams from 30 conferences were honored as All-Academic men's teams. The Cougar men's team had a 3.35 GPA.

"We are honored to have our men's team and Todd Wakefield be selected by the USTFCCCA for the combination of academic and athletic excellence," Cougar cross country coach Tim Riley said. "Last fall Todd and our men's cross country team really took being a `student athlete' to heart. To compete at the level they did at the end of the year athletically and in the classroom is what being part of the Track and Field program here at WSU is all about. I want to especially thank Tracy Keller, our academic advisor, and the Athletics academic staff for their crucial role in our success."

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have either earned USTFCCCA All-America status or finished in the NCAA region's top 15 (or top 10 percent) in 2012. For team honors, the team must have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better and have started at least five runners at their respective NCAA regional championship.
