BATON ROUGE, La. -- Washington State's Ellannee Richardson is in fourth place in the heptathlon after the first day's events at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Richardson, a redshirt junior from Gladstone, Ore., scored a first day total of 3,327 points after four events. A two-time Pac-10 heptathlon champion and two-time All-American, Richardson was the leader going into the 2002 national meet with 5,281 points. She finished fourth in the heptathlon at both the 2001 and 1999 NCAA Championships.

Wednesday, Richardson had the second best time of the field of 19 in the 100m hurdles of 13.79 seconds, wind-aided (3.3mps). Her 5-foot, 4 1/2 inches (1.64m) clearance in the high jump was tied for 10th, and well-below her lifetime-best mark of 5-7 1/4. In the shot put, Richardson had a toss of 34-3 (10.44m). She finished the day with a second-place in the 200m dash with a time of 24.03.

Kansas State's Austra Skujyte is the heptathlon leader with 3,592 points, followed by Katherine Livesey of Nebraska with 3,480 points, and Barbara Szlendakova, Iowa State, with 3,336 points.

In preliminary events Wednesday, Cougar senior Randi Smith (Valencia, Calif.) did not qualify for the 400m hurdles finals, finishing 13th in the field of 20 with a time of 58.80 seconds. The top nine times, led by the 56.39 seconds of Leshinda Demus (freshman, South Carolina), advanced to the Friday final.

Thursday, in addition to Richardson's second-day heptathlon events (long jump, javelin and 800m), WSU will have Whitney Evans competing in the women's high jump final and Anson Henry and Anthony Buchanan will run in the preliminary heats of the men's 100m dash.
