Cougars Battle Wind to Improve Marks at McDonald's Outdoor Meet

MOSCOW, Idaho -- A limited number of Cougar competitors battled gusty winds to find improved marks at the Moscow McDonald's Outdoor meet, Saturday, at the University of Idaho.
Freshman Jaycee Robertson finished second in both the 100m and 200m dashes but managed to clock a PR in the 100m of 10.51 seconds with a non-wind aided heat, and a PR of 21.00w in the 200m. Former Cougar Bennie Chatman had the winning 100m time of 10.48.
Nicole Hatcher ran a PR in the women's 100m dash with a time of 11.88w and finished second in the 200m dash with a time of 24.49w. Brandi Probasco-Canda finished fifth in the 200m with a time of 25.37w.
Matt Alverson won the men's high jump with a clearance of 2.01m/6-feet, 7 inches, and Tyson Byers, a Cougar sophomore redshirting this year, won the pole vault as an unattached competitor with a clearance at 5.05m/16-6 3/4.
Barry Leavitt led a one-two-three-four finish in the men's 400m hurdles as the Cougar freshman ran a PR time of 53.74. John Cassleman (53.98), Josh Leyk (55.38) and Tyler Fischback (55.64) followed in order. Leavitt also placed third in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.91w.
Andrea Thornton, a volunteer assistant coach and former All-American thrower at Washington State University, won the women's discus (55.97m/183-7) after winning the hammer event Friday afternoon.
Other Cougars and their finishes included: Lamarr Kirk, second in the 400m dash (51.10), Brett Ortgiesen, fourth in the javelin (tied PR 58.05m/190-5), Molly Bull and Ana Cabrera both ran 5:18.62 in the 1500m with Bull getting the win, Louise Akesson, second in the 400m hurdles (1:06.57), Robin Mikesh, second in the women's high jump (1.70m/5-7), and Bree Skinner, fourth in the triple jump (10.46m/34-4).
The Pacific-10 Track & Field Championships are the next competition for the Cougar men and women, May 14-15, at Tucson.
