AZUSA PACIFIC, Calif. -- Washington State's Steve Dwyer no-heighted in the pole vault and did not complete the decathlon at the Mt. San Antonio College Decathlon being held at Azusa Pacific College.

The senior from Redmond, Wash., struggled with his steps and did not clear the opening height of the pole vault. Dwyer and Cougar coach Rick Sloan decided to forego running the final event of the decathlon, the 1500m.

Dwyer scored a first day total of 3,708 points and was trying to better his NCAA Provisional Qualifying total of 7,229 points (Berkeley, 3/29/02) and reach the NCAA Automatic Qualifying standard of 7,500 points.

He opened the second day of competition of the Mt. SAC section of the decathlon with a 14.82 second 110m hurdles race. Dwyer's discus throw went 115-feet, 3 inches (35.12m) but the pole vault proved his un-doing. He did throw the javelin 158-1 (48.18m) before retiring from the competition.

"It was a mediocre day and not what we hoped for," Cougar coach Rick Sloan said. "Steve will have another chance at the NCAA automatic mark when he competes in the conference decathlon in Pullman next month."

The rest of the Cougar competitors began Mt. SAC competition Friday night but results were not available.
