WALNUT, Calif. -- WSU's Rachel Bertholf won her flight of the women's javelin and Meghan Leonard broke her own freshman steeplechase record Friday at the 47th Annual Mt. SAC Relays at Hilmer Lodge Stadium at Walnut, Calif.

Bertholf, a senior from Colbert, Wash., won the women's javelin "A" section with a personal-best and improved NCAA Regional Qualifying mark of 164-feet, 4 inches (50.09m). Bertholf's mark is second-farthest in school history, surpassing All-American Molly Monroe's 161-4 (49.18m) thrown at Tucson in 2000, and only behind current teammate Jenna Dean's school record toss earlier this year of 169-7 (51.70m). Dean will throw the javelin in the elite section Sunday.

In the men's javelin, Cougars also fared well. Jon Jeffreys (freshman, Spokane Valley, Wash.) finished second with a PR of 198-3 (60.42m) and Ryan Scott (sophomore, Kalama, Wash.) finished third with a PR toss of 197-10 (60.31m).

Leonard, a freshman from Newberg, Ore., finished 13th in the women's steeplechase with a PR and improved school freshman record of 10 minutes, 56.99 seconds.

During the Friday throwing events at the McDonald's Meet at Moscow, WSU's McKenzie Burgess (redshirt-freshman, Benton City, Wash.) threw a PR in the women's hammer of 160-8 (48.98m) for third place. Cougar volunteer assistant coach Andrea Thornton won the event with a throw of 182-2 (55.53m).

Washington State track and field athletes compete at again Saturday and Sunday at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., or at the McDonald's Outdoor Meet at Moscow, Idaho, Saturday.
