AUSTIN, Texas -- Washington State wide receiver Anthony Buchanan missed the first scrimmage of the Cougar football spring drills Saturday. But Anthony Buchanan, the WSU sophomore sprinter from Spokane, won the men's 100m dash at the prestigious Texas Relays Saturday at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium.

Buchanan won the 100m dash in a time of 10.28 seconds with cool and wet weather conditions closer to the norm for Pullman than Austin. Cougar teammates Anson Henry (Pickering, Ontario, Canada) finished second with a time of 10.32, and Bennie Chatman (Houston, Texas) finished fourth with a season-best and Pac-10 qualifying time of 10.38.

In another chance of good fortune, the Cougar men's 4x100m relay team found space available in the final and clocked in with a time of 40.15 for fifth place. Buchanan, Henry, Chatman and Dione Cason (Long Beach, Calif.) improved on the 40.19 of the Friday prelims. The USA "B" team won the short relay in 38.34.

Senior Randi Smith (Valencia, Calif.) finished third in the women's 400m intermediate hurdles in a season-best and improved NCAA Provisional Qualifying time of 57.88. Rice's Allison Beckford won the race in 57.46.

The WSU 1600m relay squad of Tiffany Giles (Seattle), Tamara Gulley (Long Beach, Calif.), Randi Smith (Valencia, Calif.) and Ellannee Richardson (Gladstone, Ore.) finished fourth in the final with a time of 3:38.74 after setting the school record with a prelim time of 3:37.23. Texas won the race with a time of 3:33.60.

"This was a good meet for us down here," Cougar coach Rick Sloan said. "Even though we only had a few kids, it still was an occasion for us to get into some big competition and get used to that and get kids ready for the NCAA Championships. And get ready for Idaho this coming weekend."
