April 4, 2003
AUSTIN, Texas -- Washington State University's Tyson Byers won the B section of the men's pole vault Friday at the 76th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays held at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Byers, a freshman from Spokane, won the pole vault with a clearance equal to his collegiate indoor best of 16-feet, 10 3/4 inches (5.15m), and an NCAA Regional Qualifying mark. Rick Collins finished tied for ninth place in the same section by clearing the bar at 16-4 3/4 (5.00m) which bettered his NCAA RQ mark.
Bennie Chatman ran a personal record time of 10.27 seconds for third place in the wind-aided 100m dash prelims. Chatman is one of nine sprinters to advance to the Saturday final out of the 56 competitors. His previous PR was 10.33 and he ran a 10.40w last weekend at Stanford. Teammates Anthony Buchanan and James McSwain did not race Friday due to recurring injuries and the Cougar men were unable to field a 4x100m relay team.
Sam Lightbody finished fourth in the B section of the men's discus throw with an improved NCAA RQ mark of 172-6 (52.58m). Nate Cummings placed ninth in the B section javelin with his NCAA RQ mark of 204-4 (62.28m). Matt McGee finished 18th in the same javelin section with a throw of 193-8 (59.03m). Tim Gehring fouled out of the men's hammer throw.
Ellannee Richardson qualified for the 100m hurdles final with a PR time in the prelims of 13.68 seconds, ninth-fastest among the 63 competitors, and an improved NCAA RQ mark.
Richardson also anchored the women's 4x400m relay team of Tiffany Giles, Tamara Gulley, and Monique Jessie as they finished the prelims in a time of 3:36.73: a school outdoor record for this event and the eighth team to advance to the final out of the 39 racing. Unfortunately the women's 4x100m relay did not reach the finals after posting a prelim time of 45.85, 11th of the 32 team competing.
Whitney Evans finished tied for fifth in the women's high jump A section after clearing only 5-8 3/4 (1.75m). In the B section, Briana Willis finished tied for sixth at 5-5 (1.65m) while Robin Mikesh did not clear a height.
Brittany Hinchcliffe reached an NCAA RQ mark with her seventh place discus throw of 150-1 (45.74m) in the women's section B (27 competitors) and also finished seventh in the hammer throw with an improved NCAA RQ of 179-4 (54.67m). Sammy Jo Missel finished tied for 20th among the 25 hammer throwers with a toss of 162-0 (49.38m). Both Jenna Dean and Rachel Bertholf fouled out of the women's javelin competition.
Darion Powell did not advance to the men's 110m hurdles final after posting a prelim time of 14.68, 34th among the 52 collegiate men competing.
