Smith Runs Top Prelims Time at Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas -- Washington State's Randi Smith ran the fastest time in the women's 400m intermediate hurdles prelims and Tim Gehring finished 11th in the hammer Thursday at the Texas Relays being held at Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas Austin campus.
Smith, a senior from Valencia, Calif., won the sixth of eight heats of the 400m intermediate hurdles in a time of 58.54 seconds. She finished first in the field of 54 and was one of nine to advance to the Saturday 12:30 p.m. CT final. Smith's top time this season is an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time of 58.09 run at Los Angeles last month. She owns the school record time of 57.07 for this event.
Gehring, a redshirt sophomore from Kettle Falls, Wash., threw the hammer 188-feet, 9 inches (57.53m) for 11th place among the 23 competitors. Gehring reached a lifetime best mark of 193-8 last week at Stanford. Libor Charfreitag, a senior from Southern Methodist University, won the Thursday hammer with an NCAA Automatic Qualifying mark of 244 feet even. Idaho's Tim Crater was ninth at 191-11.
