Cougars Reach Five NCAA Marks at Stanford Invite Track Meet

STANFORD, Calif. -- Washington State University competitors reached NCAA Regional Qualifying marks in the high hurdles, 5000m, 1600m relay, pole vault, and shot put at the Stanford University Invitational Track and Field Meet held at Cobb Track and Angell Field, Friday and Saturday.
Matt Mason (redshirt junior, Marietta, Ga.) equaled his lifetime-best time in the 110m hurdles prelims with an NCAA RQ time of 13.81 seconds. In the finals, Mason ran 13.82 and finished third overall but was the top collegiate runner.
Danny Wolf (redshirt sophomore, Reno, Nev.) reached an NCAA RQ time of 14:05.34 in the men's 5000m while finishing 21st.
The Cougar women's 4x400m relay team of Brandi Probasco-Canda (freshman, Portland, Ore.), Angelita Green (senior, Long Beach, Calif.), Monique Jessie (senior, Compton, Calif.), and Tamara Gulley (senior, San Jose, Calif.) finished fourth in an NCAA RQ time of 3:41.16.
Tamara Diles (redshirt sophomore, Bellevue, Wash.) tied for fifth place in the women's pole vault top section clearing a season-best and NCAA RQ height of 3.97m/13-feet, 1/4 inch.
Tim Gehring (senior, Kettle Falls, Wash.) threw the shot put 18.22m/59-9 1/2 for eighth place but has already thrown a better NCAA RQ distance this season.
Cougar men with highlighted performances include Qieed Ishmael (senior, Richmond, Va.) finished third in the men's open 400m dash with a time of 48.35. Eric Nygard (redshirt sophomore, Wenatchee, Wash.), placed eighth in the 400m hurdles with a PR time of 53.23 while Josh Leyk (sophomore, Veradale, Wash.) was 14th in a PR of 53.83, and Barry Leavitt (freshman, Benton City, Wash.) finished 26th in a PR time of 55.29. The men's 4x100m finished second overall and was the top collegiate team in a time of 40.27.
On the field, Paul Nicoletti (redshirt junior, Snohomish, Wash.) cleared the pole vault at 4.80m/15-9 for seventh place. In the men's discus, Cameron Neel (redshirt freshman, Woodinville, Wash.) was sixth with a toss of 48.98m/160-8 and Drew Ulrick (freshman, Spokane, Wash.) was eighth after throwing 48.89m/160-5.
In the women's 400m hurdles, Cougar assistant coach Ellannee Richardson finished second in a time of 58.57 while Monique Jessie was sixth in a time of 1:01.48. Nicole Hatcher 12th in top section 200m dash in time of 25.24 and Brandi Probasco-Canda placed 11th in 400m dash in a time of 57.17.
The two-day meet attracted over 4,000 competitors of all ages. The larger collegiate events were divided by qualifying marks into top and "B" sections.
In the "B" section competition, James McSwain (sophomore, Las Vegas, Nev.) won the men's 200m dash in a PR time of 21.62 seconds, and finished sixth in the 100m dash with a time of 10.89 after running a 10.74 in the prelims. Steve Barrus (senior, Clovis, Calif.) finished eighth in the men's 1500m run in a time of 3:51.34. The WSU men's 4x400m relay ran a season-best time of 3:17.38 for 19th place.
Jamil Smith (junior, Palmdale, Calif.) long jumped 6.87m/22-6 1/2 for third and Ben Hampton (sophomore, Kennewick, Wash.) triple jumped 14.12m/46-4 for 10th place. Matt Alverson (senior, Everett, Wash.) finished 18th in men's high jump but cleared 2.05m/6-8 3/4, which is an Pac-10 qualifying mark.
Marie Muai (junior, Tacoma, Wash.) finished third in the women's hammer throw with a heave of 52.81m/173-3 while teammate Sammy Jo Missel (junior, Mead, Wash.) was ninth with a distance of 50.64m/166-2. Cougar volunteer assistant coach Andrea Thornton won the women's "B" section discus with a toss of 51.34m/168-5 and finished third in the top hammer section 59.15m/194-1.
Senior Karla McGee (Lethbridge, Alb., Canada) placed tied for fifth in the pole vault after clearing the bar at 3.60m/11-9 3/4. Bree Skinner (senior, Pasco, Wash.) did not get a legal triple jump, in her first competition since recovering from a pelvic stress fracture and missing the indoor season.
The Washington State track and field teams will take on some of the top collegiate talent nationally next weekend, competing at the Texas Relays at Austin, April 1-3.
