March 24, 2004
BERKELEY, Calif. -- Washington State's Darion Powell is leading the decathlon after the first day's events at the California Multi-Events Meet at Berkeley Wednesday.
Powell, a redshirt sophomore from Kirkland, Wash., scored 3,941 points in the first five events. Cougar teammates Brandon Brownell (freshman, Olympia, Wash.) and David Turpin (senior, Oakhurst, Calif.) are second and fourth, respectively, halfway through the competition.
Powell had the top marks among the eight competitors in Group B in all five events Wednesday, including running a personal record time in the 100m dash of 10.99 seconds, wind-aided. Powell leaped 6.96m/22-feet, 10 inches in the long jump and he threw the shot put 14.29m/46-10 3/4. An All-American with his fourth place finish at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor decathlon, Powell high jumped 1.92m/6-3 1/2, and finished the day with the fastest 400m time of 50.39 seconds.
Brownell, competing in his first collegiate decathlon, accumulated 3,646 points for second place. He ran the 100m dash in a wind-aided PR time of 11.07, long jumped 6.90m/22-7 3/4, threw the shot put 12.54m/41-1 3/4, high jumped 1.74m/5-8 1/2, and ran the 400m dash in a PR 50.43.
Turpin reached fourth place with 3,600 points, just 35 points behind Cal's Scott Soberalski's third place total. Turpin ran the 100m dash in a time of 11.14w, long jumped 6.58m/21-7 1/4, threw the shot put a PR of 11.37m/37-3 3/4, high jumped 1.95m/6-4 1/4 , and ran the 400m dash in a time of 51.92.
"Hopefully the rain holds off until Thursday evening and we can get the marks we need for qualifying," Cougar Coach Rich Sloan said. "If Darion can score 7500 points he'll reach the NCAA automatic qualifying mark and Brandon and David need to reach 6800 points for the Pac-10 qualifying standard. I think they can do this."
The UC Multi-Events competition concludes Thursday with the men competing in the 110m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and the 1500m run.
