Thomas Fifth, Miller Ninth After First Day at California Multi-Events Meet

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Washington State juniors Ryan Thomas and Katie Miller are in fifth and ninth places respectively, after the first day's events of the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon at the California Multi-Events Meet Wednesday at Berkeley.

Thomas, from Olympia, Wash., accumulated a total of 3,529 points after the first five events of his debut in the decathlon. Phil McMillen, from decaimages.com, is the first-day leader among the 14 competitors with 3,857 points while Ken Calvo, University of Pennsylvania, is the top collegian with 3,636 points.

Miller, from Vancouver, Wash., has a total of 2,885 points after four events of the heptathlon. Nebraska's Ashley Selig, winner of the 2005 NCAA Indoor pentathlon, leads the field of 17 with 3,158 points.

Thomas ran the second-fastest time of the day in the 100m dash at 11.22 seconds. He long jumped 21-feet, 9 1/2 inches (6.64m), threw the shot put 37-3 3/4 (11.37m), and high jumped 6-3 1/4 (1.91m). Thomas wrapped up the day with a 400m dash time of 52.65.

Miller opened the heptathlon with a 100m hurdles PR time of 14.56 seconds. She did not fare as well in the remaining first-day events, clearing 5-3 1/4 (1.61m) in the high jump, throwing the shot put 30-10 1/4 (9.40m), and running the 200m dash in a time of 26.58.

The California Multi-Events Meet continues Thursday, at 9:30 a.m. at Berkeley, and a large contingent of Cougars will compete at the Stanford Invitational Meet, March 25-26.
