Feb. 20, 2004
MOSCOW, Idaho -- Four Washington State women and two Cougar men won events Friday night at the 29th Annual Vandal Indoor Track & Field Meet, at the Kibbie Dome.
Robin Mikesh, a sophomore from Sumner, Wash., equaled her lifetime-best in the high jump with a winning clearance at 5-feet, 7 inches (1.70m).
Marie Muai, a junior from Tacoma, Wash., won the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 60-1 (18.31m), well below her school record of 62-10 (19.15m), set last week in Seattle.
Senior Tim Gehring (Kettle Falls, Wash.) won the men's shot put with a throw of 59-6 3/4 (18.15m), two feet below his NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark set at the WSU Open.
Trandon Harvey made a successful debut as a member of the track team. The junior wide receiver on the Cougar football team won the men's triple jump with a leap of 46-10 (14.27m). Harvey was the San Diego Track Athlete of the Year as a senior at Sweetwater High in 2001, and with only limited event practice under Cougar jumps coach Kris Grimes, in addition to his conditioning drills with the football team, Harvey had several fouled jumps close to 50-feet in length.
Redshirt junior Thad Cullinan (Mukilteo, Wash.) bettered his PR in the 35-pound weight throw to 54-7 1/4 (16.64m) for fifth place. Other Cougar men improving PRs included Martin Boston (sophomore, Hayward, Calif.) and Jarrell Nelson (freshman, Bremerton, Wash.) in the 60m dash. Boston finished third in a time of 6.83 seconds and Nelson was fourth in a time of 6.89.
WSU women with improved lifetime bests included freshman Nicole McClendon (Granada Hills, Calif) in the 60m dash (7.85, fourth place). Brandi Probasco-Canda (Portland, Ore.), Monique Jessie (senior, Compton, Calif.) and Kameko Wilson (freshman, Spanaway, Wash.) followed coach Ellannee Richardson in the 400m final results. Richardson ran the oval in 53.53 with Probasco-Canda's second place time a PR of 55.49, and Wilson's PR of 57.99 good for fourth place.
Competition continues Saturday at the McDonald's Open Meet at the Kibbie Dome at Moscow, Idaho. The MPSF Indoor Championships take place Feb. 26-28, back at the Dempsey Indoor Facility on the University of Washington campus.
