Solid Performances at Vandal Indoor Track for Cougars

MOSCOW, Idaho -- The 27th Vandal Indoor Track & Field Invitational stretched very late into Friday night at the Idaho Kibbie Dome but with good outcomes for the Washington State competitors and several freshman record-setters.
WSU women broke the school record in the 4x400m relay and Cougar event winners included Anson Henry in the men's 600m dash, Darion Powell in the men's 60m hurdles, Schquay Brignac in the women's high jump, and Tamara Diles in the women's pole vault.
The women's 1600m relay team of Tamara Giles, Tamara Gulley, Randi Smith, and Ellannee Richardson finished second to the team from Cal State Northridge but set the school record and reached an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time of 3:41.62. Smith and Richardson had run the third and anchor legs on the 1999 squad which set the previous record of 3:44.17 at Reno.
Henry won the 60m dash in 6.70 seconds with teammates Anthony Buchanan second in 6.74 and Dan Brink tied for fourth with a PR of 6.99. Henry and Buchanan already have faster NCAA PQ times.
Brignac, a freshman, won the women's high jump with a lifetime-best and improved NCAA PQ mark of 5-11 1/4 (1.81m). Briana Willis finished third in the high jump.
For the third consecutive week, two Cougars broke their own freshman school records. Powell won the men's 60m hurdles in a time of 8.23 seconds, after running 8.30 last week at Lincoln, Neb. Steve Dwyer had the top time of 8.23 in the prelims, a PR for the senior decathlete, but fell in the finals. Brittany Hinchcliffe broke her the WSU freshman school record in the 20# weight throw with her third-place mark of 55-feet, 11 3/4 inches (17.06m).
Diles won the pole vault with a meet record of 13-7 3/4 (4.13m) with former Cougar All-American Jeannette Martus second at 12-8 and WSU's Karla McGee third at 12-2.
Other notable performances included: Anna Blue improved her mile time to 5:01.01 with a second place finish to Mari Chandler of the Nike Farm Team (4:50.42) while Jon Welsh was fourth in the men's 3000m but the top collegian with a time of 8:24.42. All-American Senaca Lassiter won the event in 8:10.45 running for Nike. Patrick Harrigan and Joel Gordon tied for third in the men's high jump with a clearance of 6-6 3/4. Cougar men placed second through fourth in the pole vault as Rick Collins had the top collegiate mark at 16-6 3/4 followed by Ryan Turner and Andy Kammenga clearing 16-0 3/4. Tim Gehring improved his shot put PR to 56-7 1/2 (17.26m) but finished only fifth in the nearly world class men's event.
At the Friday portion of the McDonald's II Open Meet, Piero Vojvodic won the men's triple jump with the PR mark of 49-10 (15.19m) with Cougars Jamil Smith fourth and Peter Rizzardi sixth. Blessing Ufodiama finished second in the women's triple jump. Hinchcliffe was third in the women's discus with Shannon Rance fourth and Marie Muai sixth. Former Cougar Ian Waltz won the men's discus.
The competition continues all day Saturday at the Kibbie Dome with the rest of the McDonald's II Open events.
