Six Records Set at WSU Open Indoor Track Meet

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State University athletes had a big part in the four track and two field records that were broken at the Third Annual WSU Open Indoor Track & Field Meet Saturday at the Indoor Track Facility on the WSU campus.

On the oval, Cougar women rewrote the both the 800m and mile meet records. Freshman Haley Paul (2:14.40), senior Molly Bull (PR 2:15.81) and redshirt freshman Karen DeMartini (2:16.63) finished one-two-three in the 800m run, all surpassing Ellannee Richardson's 2004 record of 2:16.92. In the one mile run, freshman Collier Lawrence won in a time of 5:12.48 but junior Hailey Young (5:26.07), and Central Washington's Lindy Mullen (5:27.28) and Sarah Benson (5:37.34) all passed WSU's Angelita Green's 2004 time of 5:38.36.

WSU's Justin Ireland won the men's 800m in a personal record time of 1:53.21, removing EWU's Josh Arnold's 2004 time of 1:54.78. In the 3000m race, Cougar sophomores Andrew Jones (8:32.04), Chris Concha (8:33.02) and Chris Williams finished one-two-three with Jones and Concha rewriting Spokane Community College's Mark Currell's 2004 time of 8:47.84.

Idaho's Tassie Souhrada won the women's high jump on fewer misses over WSU's Diana Pickler, both with a meet record clearance of 5-feet, 8 inches (1.73m), surpassing Whitney Evans' 2003 mark of 5-7 (1.70m).

Ebbie Metzinger, competing unattached, soared to 13-7 1/4 (4.15m) to win the women's pole vault, bettering Tamara Diles' 2004 record of 13-1 1/2 (4.00m). Diles was in Reno competing at the National Pole Vault Summit.

 

 

Other Cougar women in the win column Saturday included freshman La Shawnda Porter in the 200m (25.56), Diana Pickler in the 60m hurdles (8.70), Katie Miller in the long jump (PR 17-11 3/4 / 5.48m), and McKenzie Burgess in the shot put (44-6 3/4 / 13.58m).

WSU men seeing the winners' circle included James McSwain in the 60m dash (6.78 after a prelim PR time of 6.77), John Cassleman in the 400m (50.19), Bob Frey in the 60m hurdles (PR 8.43), Kyle Eaton in the high jump (6-8 3/4 / 2.05m), and Ryan Thomas in the pole vault (13-11 1/4 / 4.25m).

Next weekend Washington State hosts the Cougar Indoor meet featuring teams from Utah State, California, and Idaho.
