WSU has one of the most outstanding traditions in the jumping events in the country with top 10 lists that are truly remarkable. During the past five seasons under Coach Matthew McGee the WSU jumpers have continued to build upon that great tradition.

Under McGee's guidance in 2011, Washington State had the most high jumpers qualify for the NCAA Preliminary Round competition. High jumper Holly Parent advanced to the NCAA Indoor Championships with a leap of 6-0 (1.83m) and then leaped outdoors 6-0 3/4 (1.85m), the fourth-best height cleared in WSU history. Sophomore Stephan Scott-Ellis captured the men's triple jump title at the Pac-10 Championships. Shawn Swartz finished sixth in the men's high jump, clearing a season-best height of 6-11 (2.11m) after spending the previous 24 months juggling chemotherapy treatments for acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

In 2010, Parent and Trent Arrivey competed at both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships. Parent reached a PR of 5-11 ½ (1.82m), sixth-best in school history. Arrivey's all-time best of 7-4 ½ (2.25m) is fourth-best in WSU records. Freshman triple jumper Stephan Scott-Ellis placed 2nd at the Pac-10 Championships and was the 2nd highest placing freshman at the NCAA Preliminary Round.

In 2009, the men's high jump group was arguably the best in the entire NCAA with three seven foot jumpers in three-time All-American Trent Arrivey 7-4 1/2 (2.25m), Shawn Swartz 7-0 1/2 (2.15m), and Ryan Deese 7-0 1/4 (2.14m). Arrivey won the 2009 Pac-10 title to go with his 2008 NCAA West Regional title. The group had two 13' plus women's pole vaulters with Alexa Huestis reaching the NCAA regional championships. WSU also had three women over 40 feet in the triple jump in Sarah Burns, Candace Missouri, and Jessica Yates.

The 2007 season McGee's first responsible for all four jumping events was highlighted by pole vaulter Tyson Byers' improvement to 18-1/2 placing third at the NCAA indoor championships earning All-American honors.

Moreno Zapata and Trent Arrivey both placed in the top three at the Pac-10 Championships. Zapata finished second in the triple jump at the NCAA West Regional championships improving to a best of 51-9 1/4 earning a trip to the NCAA outdoor championships. Also the first time in school history, WSU had three women over 40-feet in the triple jump with Sarah Burns at 41-5, Catie Schuetzle at 41-3 1/4, and Kaylee Gardner at 40-10 1/4. All three advanced to the NCAA West Regional Championships.

In 2006 McGee was responsible for coaching the WSU high jumpers. Three of the four high jumpers on the team scored at the Pac-10 Championships and sophomore McKinnon Hanson also advanced to the NCAA outdoor Championships.

He was promoted to a fulltime assistant coaching position in the summer of 2005 after spending the previous year as a volunteer.

A former Cougar, McGee returned to WSU after spending 2003-2004 season as an assistant track and field coach at Diablo Valley College where he was responsible for jumps, throws, and multis, in addition to developing the strength conditioning program.

Born in San Francisco California, McGee attended College of Marin and Diablo Valley College in the Bay Area, competing as a decathlete.

He transferred to WSU and walked-on the team as a junior. He excelled as a javelin thrower and was a two time Pac-10 scorer highlighted by a second place finish in the javelin at the 2003 Pac-10 Championships.

McGee graduated in May 2003 with a B.A. in philosophy. He was named to the Pac-10 All-Academic and Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar second team and awarded a Pac-10 post-graduate scholarship.

McGee is married to former Cougar teammate and pole vaulter Karla McGee, they have a son, Liam, and a daughter, Kaiya.
