March 9 (11:53 a.m.)

Back to Cali...

...This time, for the Pac-10 Tournament.

The Cougars will face the Arizona Wildcats in the opening round for the second-straight year. Tip-off between the ninth-seeded Cougars and the eighth-seeded Wildcats is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Galen Center.

Let's take a look at the series history:

Series History
WSU Record...21-28
WSU Home...11-13
WSU Road...10-14
WSU Neutral...0-1
Streak...-3
Most WSU Points...93 (Feb. 10, 2001)
Fewest WSU Points Allowed...52 (March 12, 1988)
Widest WSU Victory...28 (90-62; March 3, 1988)
Longest WSU Winning Streak...6 (1990-92)

INDIVIDUAL STAT OF THE GAME
With the win against Oregon last week, this note kind of got lost. The Cougars pulled down 60 rebounds against the Ducks, the most by any Pac-10 team against a conference opponent in 2009-10. The total is also the second-most by a WSU squad in NCAA history.

TEAM STAT OF THE GAME
At the Pac-10 Tournament, the No. 9 seed holds a 5-3 advantage over the No. 8 seed in the opening round game. WSU, which was the No. 8 seed last year against Arizona (No. 9), swept the regular-season series. This year, the eighth-seeded Wildcats swept the regular-season series with the Cougars, this year's No. 9 seed. Interesting...

March 7 (1:18 p.m.)

Pac-10 Tournament Seedings...

Seedings for the Pac-10 Tournament are finalized, regardless of what happens today. The Cougars' opponent? Arizona.

If Washington beats Oregon, the Huskies and Ducks are tied, but Oregon has a win over a higher-seeded team. If Washington loses to Oregon, the Huskies and Wildcats are tied, but Washington has a win over a higher-seeded team.

So there you have it. WSU-Arizona in the opening round of the Pac-10 Tournament for the second-straight year.

March 6 (3:58 p.m.)

Radio Update...

Tomorrow's game will be heard live on Hit Radio 104-3 (KHTR) in Pullman/Moscow, rather than the regular station, KQQQ 1150 AM.

March 6 (2:19 p.m.)

End the Season with a Sweep?

The Washington State women's basketball team closes out the 2009-10 regular season against Oregon State Sunday at Friel Court. Tip-off between the Cougars and Beavers is scheduled for 2 p.m.

WSU is looking to sweep this weekend's series after defeating Oregon Friday (67-53), while Oregon State hasn't won in more than two months. In fact, the Beavers haven't won since knocking off WSU in the conference-opener.

With the win against the Ducks, WSU locked up the No. 9 seed in the Pac-10 Tournament. However, who the Cougars will be playing in the first-round game, the No. 8 seed, is still up in the air. As the picture clears a little bit more, which it will tonight, I will fill you guys in.

Let's move on to the series history with the Beavers:

Series History
WSU Record...24-44
WSU at Home...16-15
WSU on the Road...8-26
WSU on a Neutral Court...0-3
Streak...-2
Most WSU Points...100 (Jan. 18, 1990)
Fewest WSU Points Allowed...35 (Feb. 2, 1976)
Widest WSU Victory...43 (100-57; Jan. 18, 1990)
Longest WSU Winning Streak...5 (1975-79)

INDIVIDUAL STAT OF THE GAME
I have a couple here. The first is a note I missed Friday. However, in my defense, there was a lot to say about the win. The second is the April Cook note I promised earlier this week.

KiKi Moore's six assists against Oregon Friday gave her 102 on the season. She is just the third Cougar freshman to record 100-plus in a season in NCAA history, and the first since record-holder Jade Hyett posted 159 in 1995-96.

Cook needs just 12 points to reach 400 in 2009-10. Should she eclipse the mark, she will be the first Cougar to score 400-or-more points in back-to-back seasons since Jenni Ruff accomplished the feat during the 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons.

In my opinion, any note that can take you back a decade is a good one. Both of these satisfy...

TEAM STAT OF THE GAME
The Cougars are looking for their first weekend sweep over a conference opponent in more than nine years. WSU's last weekend sweep occurred in 2000-01, when WSU knocked off USC (Jan. 4; 79-78) and UCLA (Jan. 6; 74-52). The Cougars' last weekend sweep over the Oregon schools came in 1995-96, when WSU defeated Oregon (Jan. 11; 72-59) and No. 11/10 Oregon State (Jan. 13; 64-63).

March 4 (3:03 p.m.)

Final Week at Home...

The Cougars are home this week to close out their regular season, and first up are the Ducks. Tip-off between WSU and Oregon is 6 p.m., Friday at Friel Court.

Don't forget that you can watch the game live via Webcast at wsucougars.com.

Let's take a look at the series history with Oregon:

Series History
WSU Record...11-55
WSU at Home...6-25
WSU on the Road...5-27
WSU on a Neutral Court...0-3
Streak...-1
Most WSU Points...102 (Jan. 20, 1991)
Fewest WSU Points Allowed...26 (Feb. 28, 1974)
Widest WSU Victory...33 (102-69; Jan. 20, 1991)
Longest WSU Winning Streak...2 (1991-91; 2001-01)

INDIVIDUAL STAT OF THE GAME
I have a really good note for April Cook - and I mean a really, really good one - but I am saving it for either the Oregon State game or the Pac-10 Tournament. Thus, we are going to continue with Block Watch 2010...Carly Noyes is only two blocks away from tying the WSU single-season record for most in a season. She currently has 53, the most since 1985, when Holly Zapel (Bertus) blocked 55.

TEAM STAT OF THE GAME
We are going to give this stat another shot this week...Were the Cougars to defeat the Ducks, it would mark the first time since the 2000-01 season that WSU had notched three victories in a single run through the Pacific-10 Conference. After going 0-9 in the first run this season, WSU has won two of its six games played in the second run.

Hope to see you all out this weekend...

March 1 (10:26 a.m.)

Cougar Women's Basketball Banquet...

The Washington State women's basketball team will host its annual banquet Sunday, March 7, at Banyan's Restaurant following the game against Oregon State.

The event will begin with a social at 5 p.m., and dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. Cost to attend the banquet is $20 per person.

Attendees are asked to RSVP with Linda Rubenthaler, either via e-mail (lruben@wsu.edu) or phone (509-335-0276) by March 3.

Hope to see you all there!

February 25 (12:50 p.m.)

Heading Over the Mountains...

The Cougars are heading west to square off against cross-state rival Washington Saturday (Feb. 27), in the team's final regular-season road game of 2009-10. The Cougars and Huskies are scheduled to tip-off at 2 p.m. at Bank of America Arena in Seattle.

The Cougars are chartering to Seattle tomorrow afternoon in hopes of ending another streak. Let's take a look at the series history:

WSU Record...17-60
WSU Home...3-29
WSU Road...11-30
WSU Neutral...3-1
Streak...-29
Most WSU Points...76 (Feb. 3, 1979; Jan. 20, 1996)
Fewest WSU Points Allowed...22 (March 2, 1972)
Widest WSU Victory...46 (68-22; March 2, 1972)
Longest WSU Winning Streak...5 (1971-73; 1974-75)

INDIVIDUAL STAT OF THE GAME
With one steal - and she is averaging more than three per game, ranking in the top 10 nationally - freshman guard KiKi Moore will tie Jade Hyett (1995-96) for the Cougars' freshman NCAA single-season record. Moore currently had 84 on the season, and is coming off a seven-steal performance against UCLA.

While we are talking about steals, we really should also point out sophomore guard Danielle LeNoir's performance this past weekend. First, she sets a career-high with four steals against USC, then she doubles the total with eight against UCLA.

TEAM STAT OF THE GAME
Were the Cougars to defeat the Huskies, it would mark the first time since the 2000-01 season that WSU had notched three victories in a single run through the Pacific-10 Conference. After going 0-9 in the first run this season, WSU has won two of its six games played in the second run.

February 19 (3:23 p.m.)

Crunching Numbers...

Prior to the USC game, there were a couple of things I was looking at....

Two straight wins on the road? That hadn't happened in 14 years. A victory in Los Angeles? That hadn't happened in 11 years. You can now check both off the list.

Were the Cougars to defeat UCLA tomorrow though, notes will be flying. I am saving most of them, but I will give you one at the end of this post.

Tip-off between the Bruins and Cougars is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Pauley Pavilion. Let's take a look at the series:

Series History
WSU Record...6-42
WSU Home...6-19
WSU Road...0-22
WSU Neutral...0-1
Streak...-19
Most WSU Points...88 (March 9, 1996)
Fewest WSU Points Allowed...52 (Jan. 28, 1988; Jan. 6, 2001)
Widest WSU Victory...22 (74-52; Jan. 6, 2001)
Longest WSU Winning Streak...2 (1990-91)
Last WSU Win...Jan. 6, 2001 (74-52)
Last WSU Home Win...Jan. 6, 2001 (74-52)
Last WSU Road Win...N/A

INDIVIDUAL NOTE OF THE GAME
April Cook now has 758 career points, ranking 15th on the Pac-10's active career scoring leaders list. Jazmine Perkins' 688 career points rank 18th on the conference's active leaders list. The only sophomore ranking in front of Cook and Perkins is Stanford's Nnemkadi Ogwumike, who has 869 career points (12th).

TEAM STAT OF THE GAME
Were the Cougars to defeat UCLA, it would mark the first road sweep over the Los Angeles schools in WSU history. A weekend sweep would be the first over a conference opponent since 2000-01, when WSU knocked off USC (Jan. 4; 79-78) and UCLA (Jan. 6; 74-52), and the first on the road since 1994-95, when the team defeated Arizona State (March 2; 74-66) and Arizona (March 4; 83-65).

February 18 (2:01 p.m.)

Hotel California...

The Washington State women's basketball team is in Los Angeles, preparing to start the beginning of a three-game road trip. First up: USC. Tip-off between the Trojans and Cougars is scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight at Galen Center.

WSU freshmen KiKi Moore and Carly Noyes each lead the Pacific-10 Conference in a major statistical category. Moore ranks first in the conference in steals, averaging 3.1 per game. Noyes leads the Pac-10 in blocks, averaging 1.9 per game.

TEAM STAT OF THE GAME
The Cougars are 24 games into the season, and still rank among the national leaders in turnover margin. WSU ranks first in the Pac-10 in the statistical category, forcing 4.25 more per game than committing. The mark ranks 29th nationally.

February 13 (11:01 a.m.)

Valentine's Day with the Cardinal...

The Washington State women's basketball team closes out its weekend homestand against No. 2 Stanford, Sunday (Feb. 14). The match-up with the Cardinal is WSU's Pink Zone game for 2009-10, and tip-off against the Cardinal is scheduled for noon at Friel Court.

As part of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Pink Zone initiative, fans are asked to attend the game wearing pink to "Pink Out" Beasley Coliseum. Those wearing pink will pay just $2 each for general admission.

The first 250 fans will receive a special Washington State women's basketball "Pink Out" t-shirt sponsored by the Hope Heart Institute, Inland Imaging, Moscow Mountain Sports & Physical Therapy, Pullman Regional Hospital and St. Jude Medical Center.

In addition to the discounted ticket price for fans wearing pink, middle and junior high school students will receive free admission by showing a valid student ID card to the Beasley Coliseum ticket office, and all kids age 12-and-under receive a voucher for free popcorn.

The Cougars (6-17, 1-11 Pac-10) will be looking for their second conference win, while the Cardinal (22-1, 12-0 Pac-10), the nation's second-ranked team, will look to remain undefeated in conference play.

INDIVIDUAL STAT OF THE GAME
Following her four-block performance last night against California, freshman center Carly Noyes is now averaging 1.9 blocks per game this season and 2.3 blocks per game in Pacific-10 Conference play. Both marks lead the Pacific-10 Conference. Noyes' four-block effort is her second of the season, and each tied WSU's NCAA freshman single-game record.

TEAM STAT OF THE GAME
The Cougars have not felt the love on Valentine's Day, posting a record of just 1-4 in the five previous games played on the Holiday.

See you at the game...

Golden Bears Heading North...

Before we get to Friday's game, I have a video link to pass along regarding April Cook's Pac-10 Player of the Week accolade...

The Pac-10 has a highlight video from Cook's 33-point game HERE at its YouTube site.

You can also watch the video on All-Access via either the Pac-10's Web site or wsucougars.com.

The Washington State women's basketball team plays host to California Friday at Friel Court. Tip-off between the Cougars and Golden Bears is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Let's take a look at the series history:

INDIVIDUAL STAT OF THE GAME
Should freshman guard KiKi Moore score her season average against California (13.2 ppg), she will become just the seventh Cougar freshman in NCAA history to surpass 300 points in her debut season. Through the season's first 22 games, Moore has scored 290 points.

TEAM STAT OF THE GAME
Should the Cougars defeat the Golden Bears, it would be the first time they have posted back-to-back conference wins since the 2000-01 season. Nearly nine years ago, WSU defeated Arizona (Feb. 10, 2001; 93-86) and Oregon (Feb. 15, 2001; 77-76) in back-to-back weeks.

Day Off, Big News...

Today is a day off for the Cougars, but there is still big news coming out of Pullman...

You may have already heard about April Cook's Player of the Week. If not, here is what I sent to the media:

Washington State University sophomore guard April Cook has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Feb. 1-8, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.

Cook (Carson, Calif.) is only the second Cougar to win the award in the last 13 years, and the first in nearly four years. WSU's last conference player of the week award came Feb. 20, 2006 (Kate Benz).

Cook scored a career-high 33 points against Arizona State on national television, leading the Cougars to their first win in Tempe, Ariz., in more than 13 years and ending an 11-game losing streak to ASU. Her scoring output is the most by a Cougar in more than a decade, and ranks tied for ninth on WSU's all-time single-game scoring list.

She scored each of WSU's first 12 points in the team's first road win over ASU since Jan. 30, 1997, and connected on a career-high 13 field goals in 18 attempts (.722). Cook brought the Cougars back after being down by as many as 13 points, tying the fourth-largest deficit overcome for a victory in school history.

Cook also led the Cougars in scoring against Arizona (13).

February 5 (2:17 p.m.)

Checking in From Tempe...

First off, let me apologize for the lack of blogging this week. We should be back to our regular schedule for the foreseeable future...

The Cougars will be looking for their first victory over the Sun Devils in nearly six years, and the first in the desert since Jan. 30, 1997, more than 13 years ago.

Let's take a look at the series history with ASU:

You'll be able to catch tomorrow's game on FSN - Jim Watson has the call and Tracy Warren will serve as analyst. We are headed to practice in about a half hour, and we will be meeting up with the FSN crew at the gym.

INDIVIDUAL STAT OF THE GAME
Freshman center Carly Noyes recorded her 12th multiple-block game of the season Thursday at Arizona, passing Holly Zapel (Bertus) to become WSU's NCAA leader in blocks for a freshman (37). Zapel (35; 1981-82) had held the record for more than 27 seasons - or longer than Carly has been alive. Noyes' season total is also the fourth-most by a Cougar - freshman, sophomore, junior or senior - in NCAA history.

TEAM STAT OF THE GAME
An update on this year's signing class...Each of WSU's three signees from the 2010 recruiting class - Hana Potter (Edina, Minn.), Sage Romberg (McKinleyville, Calif.) and Brandi Thomas (Elma, Wash.) - have been nominated for McDonald's All-America accolades from their respective states.

Tip-off is tomorrow at noon (PT). Tune in...

If you haven't heard, the Cougar women are playing Washington Friday at Friel Court. Tip-off is at 5 p.m., and the game will be televised live by FSN Northwest. The broadcast team includes Brad Adam (play-by-play) and Francis Williams (analyst). There will also be a pre-game show beginning at 4:30 p.m., so be sure to tune in early.

In addition to the game, there is a major promotion being put on by Coach Daugherty. Here is what I had in my release:

COUGS HAVE HEART
The Cougars' match-up with Washington marks the third annual Cougs Have Heart game to raise support and awareness of sudden cardiac arrest. More than 1,000 fans will receive a free Cougs Have Heart t-shirt, and admission is free for all WSU faculty and staff. Admission is also free for all students (elementary, middle school, high school and college) with valid student ID. All other fans wearing Cougar apparel get in for $1.

Also, the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) will be helping the people of Haiti by collecting funds for the American Red Cross as part of the "Cougs Helping Haiti" effort.

FSN to Televise Cougars' Game Against Washington

Big news on the TV front today...

WSU's game against Washington in Pullman is going to be televised by FSN Northwest, and tip-off is going to be at 5 p.m. Spread the word...

Here is the release I posted and sent to the media:

PULLMAN - Washington State University's women's basketball game against cross-state rival Washington Friday, Jan. 29, will be televised live by FSN Northwest, WSU Director of Athletics Jim Sterk announced today.

The game against the Huskies marks WSU's third appearance on live television in 2009-10, matching the total from each of the last two seasons.

January 12 (1:55 p.m.)

Golden Bears on Deck for Cougs...

Berkeley is home to sophomore guard Jazmine Perkins, and is right down the road from freshman guard KiKi Moore's place. Because of that, there is a lot more attention being paid to tomorrow's game. As I type this, KiKi is sitting down for an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle's Scott Ostler. I will pass along the link to the story tomorrow when it becomes available.

Let's take a look at the series history for tomorrow's game:

INDIVIDUAL STAT OF THE GAME
In her only previous trip to play in her hometown (Berkeley, Calif.), sophomore guard Jazmine Perkins scored 14 points against the then-nationally-ranked Golden Bears, Jan. 8, 2009.

TEAM STAT OF THE GAME
The Cougars played the nation's second-ranked team last night, but the loss may be due to something else. Up to this point in the season, WSU just hasn't played well on Thursdays, posting a record of 0-3. However, the game against California is being played on a Saturday - the day of the week that the Cougars boast their best record (3-1).

January 12 (12:49 p.m.)

Cougars Head to Bay Area...

For the second-straight game, the Cougars will be playing a ranked team. After nearly pulling off the upset Saturday against No. 24 Arizona State, WSU will play second-ranked Stanford Thursday at 7 p.m.

For a complete look at the match-up, CLICK HERE.

INDIVIDUAL STAT OF THE GAME
She doesn't have enough attempts to rank amongst the conference leaders for the season, but in conference games Katie Grad is tied for first in the Pac-10 in free throw percentage. The redshirt freshman guard has hit all eight of her attempts thus far in conference play.

TEAM STAT OF THE GAME
WSU leads the Pac-10 in two statistical categories: turnover margin (+5.7) and offensive rebounds (19.0 per game).

January 8 (1:04 p.m.)

Sun Devils Coming to Town...

One team is going to leave Friel Court tomorrow with its first conference victory. Arizona State (8-6, 0-3 Pac-10) is in town to square off against Washington State (5-9, 0-3 Pac-10).

TEAM STAT OF THE GAME
The Cougars are looking for their fourth-straight regular-season victory over Arizona. The last time WSU defeated Arizona four consecutive times during the regular season came Feb. 2, 1995 through Feb. 29, 1996, more than 13 years ago.

January 4 (10:21 a.m.)

Back in Pullman...

I `m pretty sure I say this every time I post after a road trip, but I will say it again anyway - it feels good to be home in Pullman.

Hitting the road and having the opportunity to see different places is great. But there is something to be said for sleeping in one's own bed...

This is the last week of break for WSU before spring semester starts, but the women's basketball team will still be practicing. Here is a look at this week's schedule:

Monday, Jan. 4 - Off
Tuesday, Jan. 5 - 1-3:30 p.m. (Beasley)
Wednesday, Jan. 6 - 1-3:30 p.m. (Beasley)
Thursday, Jan. 7 - ARIZONA (6 p.m.; Friel Court)
Friday, Jan. 8 - 1-3:30 p.m. (Beasley)
Saturday, Jan. 9 - ARIZONA STATE (2 p.m.; Beasley)
Sunday, Jan. 10 - Off

I hope to have the complete January practice schedule up by the end of today.

January 2 (1:10 p.m.)

Righting the Ship in Oregon...

After dropping their conference opener last night, the Cougars will be looking to notch their first Pac-10 victory tomorrow against the Ducks. The Cougars won last year's meeting at Mac Court (58-45)

For a complete look at Sunday's game, CLICK HERE.

Last WSU Home Win ...Feb. 18, 2006 (68-53)
Last WSU Road Win ...Feb. 12, 2009 (58-45)

INDIVIDUAL STAT OF THE GAME
It isn't often a coach receives attention for an individual statistic, but this is definitely noteworthy: WSU's meeting against Oregon will be the 600th game of June Daugherty's head coaching career. Daugherty, in her third year at WSU, also spent 11 years at Washington (1996-2007) and seven years at Boise State (1989-96). Her record through 599 career games is 335-264 (.559).

TEAM STAT OF THE GAME
Should the Cougars defeat the Ducks, it would be the first time in school history that WSU had posted back-to-back road victories over Oregon.

Radio/TV Update...

For those of you planning to watch Saturday's game against San Francisco (1:30 p.m.) live in the Spokane area, the broadcast can be found on SWX, not KHQ as previously mentioned. The replay will still be available on FSN Northwest at 10 p.m.

For those of you in the Pullman/Moscow area who plan on listening to the legendary Steve Grubbs, I also have some information for you. If the broadcast isn't coming in quite as clearly on KQQQ 1150 AM, there is now a translator station on 105.3. Tune in to that this Saturday, and see if there is a difference for you...

Bus leaves for Kennewick in about 30 minutes...See you in Tri-Cities.

December 17 (11:38 a.m.)

A Bit of a Preview...

The Cougars are looking to get back on track this week, closing out the home portion of their nonconference schedule against San Francisco Saturday at the Toyota Center in Kennewick, Wash. And yes, even though the game is in Kennewick, it is a home game for WSU...

For a complete look at the game against the Dons - and every game this season - you can check out my Game Notes. CLICK HERE to take a look at 25 pages of statistical fun...

I also think it's time to get back to something we did last year on the blog, so here is a look at a couple of interesting statistics:

TEAM STAT OF THE GAME
Through the first nine games of 2009-10, the Cougars have proven that they can both take care of the ball and force turnovers. WSU ranks 11th-nationally in turnovers, averaging just 14.6 per game. WSU also ranks amongst the national leaders in both steals (24th; 11.7) and turnover margin (+6.0; 19th).

INDIVIDUAL STAT OF THE GAME
Freshman guard KiKi Moore is one of only three players in the Pacific-10 Conference - and the only freshman - currently ranking in the league's top 10 in scoring (10th; 13.6), assists (Fifth; 3.8) and steals (First; 4.2). Sophomore guard Ashley Corral (USC) and senior guard Taylor Lilley (Oregon) are the other two.

See you in Kennewick...

November 23 (4:16 p.m.)

Feels Good to be Home...

Finally back from our swing through the Midwest. Though it's nice to be home, I'm not planning on unpacking everything just yet. In just a few days, we will be hitting the road again...this time to Las Vegas. And the Cougars are planning on coming back to Pullman the second time around with a couple notches on the other side of the win-loss column...

A couple of things to pass along from the Nebraska game:

Since graduation, WSU's most recent addition to the 1,000-point club, Katie Appleton, has begun coaching a high school team in Nebraska, and she brought her entire squad to root on the Cougs. After the game, Katie's team sang the Cougar Fight Song, and they had the whole thing down. Even the clapping and spelling parts at the end...

Another note...I'm not sure if it came through on radio, but KiKi Moore had the Nebraska fans in disbelief with some of her moves. At a few points during the game, there were collective "Ooohs" and "Ahhs" with the way KiKi handles the ball., and I'm not just talking about Katie Appleton's team and the Calderwood family (which was out in full force for this trip). There were nearly 4,000 people there, and every single one of them was thoroughly impressed.

On to this week's schedule:

Monday, Nov. 23 - Off
Tuesday, Nov. 24 - 10 a.m.-1 p.m. (PEB)
Wednesday, Nov. 25 - 10 a.m.-1 p.m. (PEB)
Thursday, Nov. 26 - 10 a.m.-1 p.m. (PEB)
Friday, Nov. 27 - Travel Day
Saturday, Nov. 28 - BRADLEY (4:30 p.m.; Lady Rebel Round-up; Las Vegas, Nev.)
Sunday, Nov. 29 - BOISE STATE or UNLV (TBA; Lady Rebel Round-up; Las Vegas, Nev.)

November 22 (10:00 a.m.)

Thomas was the Defensive Player of the Year and Co-Most Valuable Player of the Evergreen Conference during the 2008-09 season.

Thomas' accolades include first-team All-Evergreen Conference (2007-08), Seattle Times Athlete of the Week, WIAA Sportsmanship Award at the state tournament (2008) and all-academic during the 2008-09 season.

Thomas also played varsity soccer and varsity volleyball, earning second-team all-league and team MVP in 2008. She competed in track and field, and was the triple jump state champion in 2008 and 2009 and holds the Elma High School triple jump record (37 feet, 9.5 inches).

According to Scout.com: "She's a multi-sport standout who helped lead Elma to a fourth place finish in the state tournament last season. She averaged 14.8 points, 14.2 rebound and 4.7 blocks per game. Thomas plays power forward and center for Elma, but projects as a shooting guard or small forward in college. Sage Romberg Bio, Photo Gallery...

GALLERY

Sage Romberg ranks No. 87 in the HoopGurlz 100, No. 73 by the All Star Girls Report and is the No. 23 shooting guard prospect in the nation according to HoopGurlz.

Romberg has been the Humboldt Del Norte League Girls' Basketball Most Valuable Player each of the last three years, and a starter for George Quintero's California Storm AAU team the last two years.

Romberg's accolades include Cal-Hi Athlete of the Week, MVP of the Redwood Empire Invitational, All-Tournament at the Marin Catholic Lady Cat Classic, Nike Tournament of Champions and the Brad Warze Evans Mechanical Panther Classic. Not just a star on the court, Romberg was also HDNL girl's golf champion three years in a row.

According to HoopGurlz: "Sage Romberg is a terrific combination of solid skills and high basketball IQ. The 6-1 wing guard displays excellent body control and balance when shooting from the perimeter or driving to the baskets. The Cal Storm swing player has great court vision and has a nose for being around the ball. Romberg plays focused and makes good decisions with the ball. She definitely has a set of basketball skills that will transition well to the college game."

Hana Potter Bio, Photo Gallery...

GALLERY

Hana Potter, rated the No. 43 post in the country according to HoopGurlz, led her team to a third-place finish in the state tournament as a freshman.

As a junior, Potter made the all-tournament team during the Christmas Tournament, garnered all-conference accolades and was voted her team's most improved player. She also held the highest free throw percentage on her team.

According to HoopGurlz: "At the End of the Trail, it was the 6-2 Potter who stepped up and scored eight points in a three minute span to push the lead up and close the deal against the San Jose Cagers. She did damage with nice touch on two 10-foot jumpers and scored twice in the post, one time splitting a double team."

November 11 (10:00 a.m.)

Quotes from the Signees...

Hana Potter...
"I fell in love with the school, the campus and the town of Pullman. The people are great, the coaches and players are amazing, and the minute I stepped foot on campus I felt like I had found my home."

Sage Romberg...
"WSU is just what I was looking for. I felt a great connection with the coaching staff, and respect what they have accomplished in their careers. I was looking for a team that is on the rise and I feel that is exactly what the Cougars offer. I'm looking forward to being a part of Wazzu women's basketball becoming a powerhouse in the Pac-10. The college and town atmosphere were also attractive to me. Coming from a small town myself, I felt very at home in Pullman."

Brandi Thomas...
"The atmosphere at WSU makes me feel like I'm right back in my home town. The energy and support are unreal! The women's basketball program is wonderful, from the coaching and support staff to the team itself! After talking with the coaching staff, I know I have chosen the right place for me. I believe they will help me achieve my goals to further my basketball career after college, and to know I have their support is an amazing feeling. I know there are going to be big things happening with the women's program and I am very honored and excited to be a part of this and part of the Cougar Family! Thank you to everyone for believing in me and for your continued support!"

November 11 (9:54 a.m.)

Quotes from Coach Daugherty...

On Hana Potter...
"Hana is a strong, physical post player who runs the court and scores with a banger mentality."

On Sage Romberg...
"Offensively, Sage is long and lean. She is a smooth scorer with a high basketball IQ."

On Brandi Thomas...
"Brandi is a workhorse defensively that loves to dominate her opponent with defensive energy and block shots. She is definitely one of the best high school rebounders ever to come out of the state of Washington."

Taking a Look Back...

If you missed WSU's second and final exhibition game, you missed out...

Once again, four Cougars scored in double figures. April Cook led the scoring onslaught this time around, racking up 17 points. Katie Madison (16) and Jazmine Perkins (16) were once again in double figures as well. The fourth? True freshman center Carly Noyes added 12.

Freshmen KiKi Moore and Ireti Amojo each got their first starts. Moore was one of four players with three assists, and Amojo scored nine points and pulled down eight rebounds.

Perkins filled the stat sheet once again...in addition to her 16 points, she pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, recorded a game-high five steals and had three assists.

If you missed the game, check out this HIGHLIGHT VIDEO.

WSU won its two exhibition games by a combined 60 points, and is now ready for the regular season. This Sunday's game against UC Davis (2 p.m. at Friel Court) is the only regular season game at home for the Cougars during the month of November. Don't miss it...

Signing Day announcement to come a little later today...

Cougars Picked Sixth

I am preparing a release to send to the media and post on the front page of wsucougars.com, but as I will do throughout the year, the information is getting posted here first...

The Pac-10 released the 2009-10 Preseason Coaches' Poll, and the Cougars have been picked sixth - the highest prediction for WSU since the conference started the poll prior to the 1998-99 season. WSU is predicted to finish ahead of Oregon State, Oregon, Arizona and Washington.

Prior to this season, the highest the Cougars had been predicted to finish was eighth in 1998-99.

Here is the complete poll with total points (first-place votes are in parentheses):

1. Stanford (9) - 81
2. California - 67
3. Arizona State (1) - 64
4. UCLA - 63
5. USC - 48
6. Washington State - 33
7. Oregon State - 29
8. Oregon - 23

In order to view the webcasts, sign up for Cougar All-Access at wsucougars.com by clicking HERE.

In addition to viewing the webcasts, All-Access subscribers will also be able to hear the radio broadcasts through Cougar All-Access.
