Cougars Post Scrimmage Win Over Central Washington

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State baseball collected 24 hits in a 23-5 scrimmage win against visiting Central Washington University at Bailey-Brayton Field Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars, prepping for the 2018 season has added 16 newcomers to a club that went 24-29 last season including four straight series wins during Pac-12 Conference play, is playing the first of two fall scrimmages. Washington State jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first inning and added three more in the second inning. The bats stayed hot throughout the day and WSU erupted for eight runs in the sixth inning highlighted by an inside-the-park grand slam by Blake Clanton and added five more in the seventh.

Junior shortstop Andres Alvarez and sophomore third baseman Dillon Plew each collected three hits and scored three times with Plew adding a two-run homer. Junior second baseman Justin Harrer scored four times and Clanton finished the day with six RBI with the grand slam.

On the mound, redshirt-sophomore right-hander Davis Baillie fired two scoreless innings with four strikeouts and redshirt-sophomore lefthander Isaac Mullins later struck out the side in a scoreless inning of work. Redshirt-senior Collin Maier struck out four in his two innings of work while senior southpaw Scotty Sunitsch struck out two in 1.2 innings of work.
