SARASOTA-BRADENTON, Fla. – Former Washington State rowers, Nicole Hare and Lisa Roman, placed second in their heat as part of Canada's women's eight crew, Tuesday, at the 2017 World Rowing Championships.

Both members of the 2016 Canadian Olympic team, Hare (Calgary, Alberta) and Roman (Langley, B.C.) are joined in the eight by fellow Olympians, Susanne Grainger, Hillary Janssens, Jennifer Martins and Christine Roper, as well as Paralympic bronze-medalist, Kristen Kit as coxswain. Kristin Bauder and Rebecca Zimmerman are also members of the eight crew.  

The Canadian crew clocked in at 6:09.690, just over two seconds behind first-place Romania at 6:07.320. The Netherlands was third, followed by China in fourth. Romania advances directly to the A Final, along with New Zealand, which won the first heat. Canada, the Netherlands and China move on to the Repechage along with the United States, Great Britain and Russia. The Repechage heat will take place Thursday, Sept. 28 at 9:51 a.m. PT.

Hare and Roman are also competing with Canada's women's four crew, which moved on to the Repechage Monday, and will race again, Wednesday, Sept. 27, at 8:25 a.m. PT. 

Hare's former teammate, Ieva Adomaviciute is also competing for her native, Lithuania in the double sculls. Her crew won its heat yesterday to advance to the A/B Semifinals and will race Friday, Sept. 29 at 8:25 a.m. PT. 

Adomaviciute competed with the Cougar rowing team for four seasons, redshirting her senior season (2015-16) to train and compete with the Lithuanian national team. She is a two-time Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Division I All-American and First Team All-Region 5 honoree (2013, 2017), as well as a 2017 Pac-12 All-Conference honoree. In 2013, Adomaviciute was named the Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year. Last year, she captured gold in the single sculls at the Under-23 World Rowing Championships. 

Hare was a member of the Cougar varsity rowing team for four seasons, rowing in the varsity boat all four years (2013-17). She was a three-time CRCA All-Region 5 honoree, picking up first team honors in 2014 and second team in 2015 and 2017. In both 2014 and 2015, Hare was named CRCA Division I All-America Second Team. She is returning to duty for the Canadian national team, having competed in the women's pair at the 2016 Rio Olympics. She won gold at the 2016 World Rowing Championships Under-23 Championships in the women's pair. 

A transfer from University of the Fraser Valley, Roman competed with the Cougar varsity rowing team for three seasons, competing in the varsity boat all three years (2010-12). Roman was named CRCA Division I Second Team All-America in 2012, as well as first team all-Region 5. She has competed with the Canadian women's eight since 2011, having won gold at the World Rowing Cup III in 2015. She's an Olympian having helped guide the women's eight to a fifth-place finish at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
