Adomaviciute Wins Heat at World Rowing Championships

Hare and Roman finished third in their heat Monday.

SARASOTA-BRADENTON, Fla. – Former Washington State University rower, Ieva Adomaviciute, won her heat to advance to the A/B semifinals, while her fellow WSU alums, Nicole Hare and Lisa Roman advanced to the Repechage in their respective event, Monday, at the 2017 World Rowing Championships.

Adomaviciute is rowing with the Lithuanian national team, while Hare and Roman are with the Canadian national team. 

A native of Kaunas, Lithuania, Adomaviciute helped lead the Lithuanian women's double sculls boat to victory in the first heat of the event against Australia, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Germany. Joined by Milda Valciukaite, the Lithuanian duo notched a time 6.58.28, nearly four seconds ahead of Australia which finished second with a time of 7.02.10. The Lithuanian crew now moves onto the A/B Semifinals, Friday, Sept. 29 at 8:25 a.m. They will face New Zealand and the United States, who won their heats, as well as the top-3 teams from the Repechage. 

Hare (Calgary, Alberta) and Roman (Langley, British Columbia), are competing with both the Canadian four and eight crews. They competed in the four Monday, helping lead their women's four crew to a third-place finish in their heat. The Canadian four crew finished with a time of 6.42.750, nearly seven seconds behind Russia, who came in with a time of 6.35.790. China finished second, three seconds ahead of Canada. The Canadians move on to the Repechage, Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 8:25 a.m., looking to place in the top-two to advance to the A Final. The women's eight will see its first racing Tuesday in Heat 2 at 10:30 a.m., going up against Russia, China and the Netherlands. The winner of each heat will advance directly to the A Final. 

Adomaviciute competed with the Cougar rowing team for four seasons, redshirting her senior season (2015-16) to train and compete with the Lithuanian national team. She is a two-time Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Division I All-American and First Team All-Region 5 honoree (2013, 2017), as well as a 2017 Pac-12 All-Conference honoree. In 2013, Adomaviciute was named the Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year. Last year, she captured gold in the single sculls at the Under-23 World Rowing Championships. 

Hare was a member of the Cougar varsity rowing team for four seasons, rowing in the varsity boat all four years (2013-17). She was a three-time CRCA All-Region 5 honoree, picking up first team honors in 2014 and second team in 2015 and 2017. In both 2014 and 2015, Hare was named CRCA Division I All-America Second Team. She is returning to duty for the Canadian national team, having competed in the women's pair at the 2016 Rio Olympics. She won gold at the 2016 World Rowing Championships Under-23 Championships in the women's pair. 

A transfer from University of the Fraser Valley, Roman competed with the Cougar varsity rowing team for three seasons, competing in the varsity boat all three years (2010-12). Roman was named CRCA Division I Second Team All-America in 2012, as well as first team all-Region 5. She has competed with the Canadian women's eight since 2011, having won gold at the World Rowing Cup III in 2015. She's an Olympian having helped guide the women's eight to a fifth-place finish at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
