PULLMAN, Wash. - Bolstered by a championship finish out of their senior captain
Alivia Brown, the Washington State women's golf team captured it's home course title at the 2017 WSU Cougar Classic for its first tournament victory of the season. Playing in cold and wet conditions throughout the two-day tournament, the Cougs closed out play at Palouse Ridge Golf Club at nine-over par to hold off Sacramento State by six strokes. The win at home was WSU's sixth since the start of the tournament in 2008 while their team score of 873 was the fifth-best team total score while nine-over ranked fourth all-time in tournament history.
Playing her way through adverse conditions, Brown persevered for her first career title as the senior posted a 56-hole total of 210, -6. Brown found herself alone at the top of the standings as the lone golfer to break par at the Cougar Cup after posting a tournament best 69, -3 Tuesday afternoon. Additionally, Bown's performance at the tournament proved to be one of the best all-time in Cougar Cup history as her six-under tied for the second lowest tournament score in the Cup's 10-year history.
Finishing just behind her fellow captain, senior
Bree Wanderscheid put together a solid effort in her final Cougar Cup as she ended Tuesday tied for second place at one-over. Her final score was bolstered by her own three-under, 69, shot in the tournament's second round Monday afternoon, one of three 69's posted during the two days.
Marie Lund-Hansen came up with her own top-10 finish at the event coming in to the clubhouse in seventh place at +5.
The Cougs will take their winning way on the road to Coeur D'Alene for the CDA Resort Collegiate Invitational hosted by Gonzaga Sept. 26-27.
