With training camp over, the Cougs had a chance to look at and evaluate their roster and the roles of their players in preparation for the kick off to the 2017 regular season. While the battles for spots on the field went on, we previewed the Cougs around the pitch with final look at the last line of defense, the goalkeepers.
What To Look Out For In Camp According To Coach Shulenberger:
" We are deeper in the net than we are at any other spot on the field. It will be interesting to see how everything plays out as our four keepers battle to make their mark. We feel really good with who we are bringing back and the new additions joining the team.
What's The Same:
The captain, Ella Dederick. Dederick has been the Cougs' starter for the last two seasons. Her abilities on the field are a given and only continue to improve. An upperclassmen who has three years of college under her belt (she redshirted her freshman year), she's really turned it on off the field. She has grown into herself maturity wise. She has truly become a leader now and was named one of the team's two captains. In two seasons, Dederick has posted 22 wins and seven shutouts to go with a 0.99 goals against average.
What's Different:
While Dederick has played almost every minute, the Cougs backup in 2017 was senior
Alexis Thode. Even without Thode, the Cougs are deep in the net with three hungry keepers below her. Redshirt-Sophomore
Emma Dahline, who like Dederick redshirted her first year on campus, has taken care of herself, upped her fitness, and has stepped up her maturity and leadership. Junior transfer
Rachel Thompson has collegiate experience having played in the national semi's in junior college. True freshman
Courtney Worstell has been a standout in high school and in club having played for the same club Dederick played for in California. All three can push Dederick giving the Cougs a competitive position that will force all four to continue to get better.
