T&F Teams, Student-Athletes Earn National Academic Honors

NEW ORLEANS -- Washington State University men's and women's track and field teams, as well as 10 student-athletes, received national recognition for their combination of athletic and academic excellence in 2017 among all NCAA Division I institutions by the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The Cougar women's team, with a 3.39 cumulative grade point average, was one of eight Pac-12 members and one of 218 DI women's programs to earn the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors.

Six WSU women track and field competitors were singled out for individual All-Academic awards: Greer Alsop (redshirt junior, triple jump, Invercargill, New Zealand) 3.80 GPA, psychology major; Devon Bortfeld (junior, steeplechase, Sammamish, Wash.) 3.79 GPA, psychology major; Emily Dwyer (redshirt senior, steeplechase, Sammamish, Wash.) 3.41 GPA, marketing/psychology majors; Kristine Felix (redshirt senior, pole vault, Wailuku, Hawai'i) 3.72 GPA, biology major; Liz Harper (senior, heptathlon, Missoula, Mont.) 3.35 GPA, biology major; and Marlow Schulz (junior, middle distance, Whitefish, Mont.) 3.92 GPA zoology major.

The Cougar men's team, with a 3.11 cumulative grade point average, was one of five Pac-12 members and one of 142 DI men's programs to earn the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors.

The four WSU men honored were: Ja'Maun Charles (sophomore, sprints, Pleasanton, Calif.) 3.49 GPA, undeclared major; Peyton Fredrickson (sophomore, high jump, Ridgefield, Wash.) 3.38 GPA, undeclared major; Kyler Little (sophomore, steeplechase, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) 4.00 GPA, physics major; and Matthew Swanson (graduate student, North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) 3.75 GPA, MBA.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met at least one of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
