PULLMAN, Wash. – Incoming Washington State freshman tennis student-athlete Michaela Bayerlova captured the first professional tournament title of her career when she won the Alkmaar Futures event in Alkmaar, Netherlands, June 25.
Bayerlova, who will enroll at WSU in August, wasted no time making a statement in the tournament, knocking off top-seed Sviatlana Pirazhenka in the first round. The straight-set win came against the 456th-ranked player in the world. She followed that up with straight-set wins over Sally Peers, who has reached a career-best world ranking of 145, and Katharina Hering, who is ranked 727.
In the semifinals, Bayerlova defeated Eliessa Vanlangendonck, ranked 794, in three sets before capturing the title with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Laura Heinrichs, ranked 891.
Following the tournament, Bayerlova improved to a career-best ranking of 769. She had previously attained a high of 773 on the Women's Tennis Association world rankings. She has reached the semifinals of the $25,000 event in Plzen, Czech Republic, and twice reached the quarterfinals in $10,000 events. As a junior she rose to a high of No. 129 in the International Tennis Federation rankings, capturing three Grade 4 doubles titles, one Grade 2 and one Grade 3 doubles event. Bayerlova also reached the final of a Grade 4 singles tournament in 2015 and Grade 3 event in 2016 in Lion Cup, Ukraine.
