Seven Cougars Named CRCA 2017 Scholar-Athletes

Cougar seniors Mihaela-Teodora Berindei, Nicole Hare and Jessi Howe are each receiving the honor for the third time.
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Seven members of the Washington State University women's rowing team were named 2017 National Scholar-Athletes by the College Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA), the organization announced Wednesday.
To be eligible, the student-athlete must be in her second, third or fourth year of eligibility, have rowed in her institution's NCAA eligible boat(s) for a minimum of 75 percent of the current spring races and have a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher for her career.Â
Seniors Mihaela-Teodora Berindei, Nicole Hare and Jessi Howe, juniors Jenna Mangiagli and Emily Morrow, and sophomores Paige Danielson and Taija Thompson were each named CRCA National Scholar-Athletes, each having maintained a cumulative 3.5 grade point average or higher throughout their careers. To be eligible, each rowing student-athlete must be in her second, third or fourth year of eligibility and rowed in a minimum of 75 percent of the spring races in an NCAA boat.Â
Berindei (Cimpeni, Romania) is an accounting major with a 3.93 GPA, Hare (Calgary, Alberta) is a marketing major with a 3.70 GPA, while Howe (Bothell, Wash.) is a Civil Engineering major with a 3.55 GPA. All three are receiving the honors for the third time in their careers. Â Mangiagli (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Morrow (Regina, Saskatchewan) are both receiving their second scholar-athlete honors. Mangiagli is majoring in human development with a 3.63 GPA, while Morrow is a criminal justice major with a 3.71 GPA. Â In their first year of eligibility for the honor, Danielson (St. Cloud, Minn.) and Thompson (Victoria, British Columbia) are picking up their first honors. Danielson is in the honors college and is majoring in electrical engineering with a 4.0 GPA, while Thompson is undeclared and has a 3.61 GPA.
The Cougars concluded the 2017 season finishing 14th as a team at the NCAA Championships held at Mercer Lake at West Windsor, N.J., May 26-28.
