CLEMSON, S.C. – No. 14 Washington State University rowing raced in the first two sessions of the Clemson Invitational, Saturday, on Lake Hartwell. The WSU varsity eight utilized a pair of strong second-place finishes to qualify for Sunday's 'A' Final. Both the second varsity eight and varsity four crews advanced to their respective 'B' Finals.
The varsity eight (coxswain –

Isabella Watt) challenged No. 4 Ohio State for first in the Cougars' opening race. WSU placed second behind OSU, at 6:26.194. The fourth-ranked Buckeyes won the heat at 6:20.630. No. 19 Duke finished third behind the Cougars, followed by Oklahoma, Oregon State, Penn, and Cornell.
WSU's second varsity eight (coxswain –

Taija Thompson) was edged by the only other ranked crews in its heat. The Cougars raced to third at 6:30.251. No. 4 Ohio State won the heat, and No. 19 Duke finished second, only 1.4 seconds ahead of WSU.
The Cougar varsity four (coxswain – Mikaelyn Davis,

Sue Yu) was fourth in its first heat of the day at 7:22.251. Once again, No. 4 Ohio State won the heat, and starting with No. 19 Duke at second, each of the remaining crews crossed the line in three-second increments. Oklahoma took third, and Penn, Cornell, and Oregon State finished behind the Cougars.
In the final race of the morning session, the WSU third varsity eight (coxswain-

Miranda Armstrong) placed fifth at 7:04.317. No. 10 Virginia 'A' won the heat and other ranked crews Ohio State, Indiana, and Louisville crossed ahead of the Cougars.
The evening session of the Clemson Invitational was delayed 30 minutes due to windy conditions. When the second session got underway, the WSU third varsity eight finished fifth in a heat that included six ranked teams. The Cougars crossed at 6:49.383, just over a second away from fourth-place Oklahoma. No. 4 Ohio State continued its winning ways at the Invite, taking the heat at 6:40.255.
In its second race of the day, the WSU varsity four took third in its heat, defeating four other crews including Pac-12 opponent UCLA and No. 20 Indiana. WSU crossed at 7:25.861, just under two seconds behind second-place Oklahoma. No. 10 Virginia won the heat with an open-water advantage at 7:17.015.
The Cougar second varsity eight was locked in a close battle for second in its second race of the day. No. 10 Virginia won the heat, followed by No. 20 Indiana. Oklahoma and WSU were within 3 seconds of the Hoosiers, but OU was able to edge WSU by just over a half of a second. The Cougars crossed fourth at 6:37.243. Once again, WSU finished ahead of Pac-12 foe UCLA as well as Cornell and Columbia.
WSU's varsity eight finished the day with another second-place finish. The Cougars fought tooth-and-nail with No. 20 Indiana to try to win the day's final heat, but the Hoosiers were able to hold on in the final sprint for a .7-second victory. WSU crossed at 6:26.461, and defeated No. 10 Virginia, who crossed third. The Cougars also out-raced Oklahoma, UCLA, Columbia, and Cornell.
The Cougars wrap up the Clemson Invitational tomorrow, and each of the WSU boats will compete in Final Heats starting at 4:30 a.m. PT/. 7:30 a.m. ET, with the varsity eight's 'A' Final race. Racing has been moved up one hour due to anticipated inclement weather.
