Cougars to Compete at Bandon Dunes

The men's golf team travels to Bandon, Ore., to compete against several ranked opponents.

THIS WEEK: The Washington State men's golf team is set to compete at the Bandon Dunes Championship, Sunday through Tuesday, March 12-14.

THE TOURNAMENT: The tournament will be held at the Old MacDonald Course, a 6,944-yard track at a par-71, at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort…this will be the eighth-consecutive year Gonzaga has hosted the tournament…one round will be played each day with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

THE FIELD: Joining WSU and host-school Gonzaga in the 16-team field will be Auburn, Boise State, Colorado, CSU-Northridge, Denver, Fresno State, Georgia State, Oregon, Oregon State, San Jose State, Seattle U, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and Utah Valley…Texas Tech (ninth), Oregon (14th), Texas A&M (18th), Auburn (19th), and Colorado (21st) are all currently ranked in the top-25.

REPRESENTING WASHINGTON STATE: Competing for the Cougars will be junior Zach Anderson, sophomore AJ Armstrong, senior Nick Mandell, junior Derek Bayley, and sophomore Grant Cole. Junior Brian Mogg will be competing as an individual.

LAST TIME AT BANDON DUNES: At the 2016 tournament, Washington State finished ninth with a three-round score of 904 (+52)…Bayley tied for 25th (+11, 224), his eighth top-25 performance of the season…Mandell tied for 37th place after shooting 15-over through three rounds (228)…Armstrong tied for 46th (+17, 230), while Anderson tied for 63rd (+25, 238).

LAST TIME ON THE GREEN: WSU finished seventh at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate, March 4-5, at Scottsdale, Ariz…in a career-best performance, Anderson shot 5-under par through three rounds and took fifth place (211)…Armstrong ended play in 28th with a total score of 219 (+3)…Mandell and Bayley both tied for 34th (+6, 222)…Mogg tied for 46th (+10, 226).

COACHING STAFF: The team is led by first-year head coach Dustin White, who was an assistant coach at WSU before accepting the head coach position…White golfed for the Cougars from 1999-2003…assistant coach Chris Gilbert joined the WSU coaching staff this season…Gilbert graduated from Kansas in 2013 and turned pro the same year before accepting the assistant coach position.
