SAN FRANCISCO – Washington State University men's basketball senior
Josh Hawkinson has been named to the 2016-17 Pac-12 Conference Men's Basketball All-Academic First Team, marking his third-straight conference academic honor, commissioner Larry Scott announced, Tuesday.
The honor marks the second-straight Pac-12 All-Academic accolades for Hawkinson, who was named to the second team as a sophomore in 2014-15. A native of Shoreline, Wash., Hawkinson graduated with a degree in management operations in the summer of 2016 after just three years at WSU, and is currently working on his master's in business administration through WSU's one-year MBA program.Â
A star both in the classroom and on the court for the Cougars, Hawkinson will conclude his Washington State career as the school's career record holder for rebounds and double-doubles as he currently has 1,003 rebounds and 55 double-doubles. He also holds the single-season rebounding record which he set as a sophomore in 2014-15.Â
Hawkinson ranks second in the Pac-12 in rebounding this season with 10.1 rebounds per game, second for free throw percentage at .836, 11th for scoring with 15.6 points per game and fourth for minutes played (1,061). Hawkinson leads the league and ranks fourth in the nation with 8.3 defensive boards a game. He became the 13th Pac-12 player to reach the 1,000 career rebounds and currently ranks 12th in the league's career record books. Hawkinson also finished his Pac-12 career ranked eighth with 583 rebounds in conference play. He was named to the All-Pac-12 Second Team Monday, marking his third-straight all-conference honors and his first second team accolades.
The Cougars have had at least one representative on the conference all-academic team each of the last four years.Â
One team of five student-athletes make up the first team, followed by the next five making up the second team. All others nominated receive honorable mention accolades. To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor and in at least their second year at the respective school.
