RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. --Â The Washington State women's golf team finished 11th at SDSU's March Mayhem after splitting its final two matches, Tuesday, at The Farms Golf Club.
After moving into the consolation bracket of the tournament, the No. 10 seed Cougars fell to No. 14 seed New Mexico 3-1-1 in the third round and defeated No. 8 seed UNLV 3-1-1 in the fourth round of the tournament. No. 1 seed USC won the event, defeating No. 6 seed BYU 5-0-0 in the championship match. No. 7 seed Pepperdine defeated No. 12 seed Fresno State 3-2-0 to take third place at the tournament.Â
Freshman Marie Lund-Hansen won both of her matches Tuesday, beating New Mexico's Eva Saulnier and UNLV's Elizabeth Prior both by 1-up. The third-round match against Saulnier remained all-square through the final seven holes until Lund-Hansen was able to move 1-up and secure her win on the final hole. The Denmark native posted a strong performance in the fourth round, carding three birdies and leading wire-to-wire to finish 1-up of Prior.Â
Junior Bree Wanderscheid fell to her third-round opponent, Alexandra Moisand of New Mexico, 2&1. The pair remained all-square with four holes left, but Moisand birdied on the 15th hole and was able to keep her lead until the end. Wanderscheid bounced back in her final match, posting an impressive 4&3 victory over Alyssa Getty of UNLV. After going 3-up in the first five holes, Wanderscheid led wire-to-wire and finished 4-up.Â
Sophomore Madison Odiorne dropped her first match to New Mexico's Darian Zachek, 2-up. Odiorne was only down one with six holes remaining, but Zachek held onto her lead until the final hole of the round, sealing a New Mexico victory. The sophomore golfer played her fourth-round opponent, Alexandra Kaui of UNLV, to 17 holes and the pair finished all-square. Odiorne was 1-up with just four holes left until Kaui made a birdie to square the match on the 15th hole.Â
Junior Alivia Brown dropped her first match of the day to New Mexico's Manon Molle, 3&2. Molle went 3-up after the first four holes and Brown was unable to diminish the lead. The junior golfer rebounded in her fourth match, tying with UNLV's Mackenzie Raim. After being down by two with five holes left, Brown won the final three holes to go all-square with Raim.Â
Senior Cherokee Kim tied Ingrid Gutierrez of New Mexico as the pair finished all-square. After Kim went 2-up through the first seven holes, Gutierrez squared the match on the 14th hole, and neither golfer was able to take a lead. Kim did not compete in her final match as her opponent, Harley Dubsky of UNLV, conceded her entire final-round match.
Next up, the Cougars travel to Napa, Calif., to compete at the Silverado Showdown, April 10-12.
