LOS ANGELES -- Washington State's
CJ Allen,
Cole Smith and
Atina Kamasi won their events Saturday at the USC Trojan Invitational at Loker Stadium/Cromwell Field on the USC campus.
Senior
CJ Allen (Allyn, Wash.) won the men's 400m hurdles in a solid season-opening time of 50.43 seconds. Allen, a 2016 second team All-American, has a lifetime-best time of 50.16.
Cole Smith (redshirt senior, Hoquiam, Wash.) won the men's javelin with a heave of 216-feet 7 inches (66.01m), a five-foot PR achieved on his final throw of the day.
Brad Stevens placed third with his mark of 212-4 (64.71m). Smith also captured fifth place in the high jump, leading Cougars
Peyton Fredrickson,
Max English and
Keelan Halligan, as all cleared a height of 6-4 3/4 (1.95m).
Freshman
Atina Kamasi, who arrived at WSU in January from her hometown of Novi Sad, Serbia, won the women's javelin with a throw of 155-6 (47.39m) which is 10th-best in WSU's all-time records. Fellow freshman
Kelsey Kehl captured third place with her throw of 152-7 (46.51m) while
Alissa Brooks-Johnson threw 136-10 (41.72m) for sixth.
Sprinter
Regyn Gaffney, a sophomore from Chehalis, Wash., ran a PR time of 11.67 seconds in the women's 100m dash for the runner-up spot. Her time is the fourth-best ever run in WSU history.
Danielle Darden's time of 12.12 was 13th,
Jordyn Tucker's 12.13 was 14th,
Tierney Silliman's time of 12.19 was 16th, and
Lauren Newman ran a time of 12.51 for 20th. Gaffney ran the 200m dash in a time of 24.47 for 11th place with Tucker 23rd in a time of 25.18 and Silliman 24th in a time of 25.31. The WSU women's 4x100m relay team of Tucker, Gaffney, Silliman, and Darden took third place with a time of 45.84.
In the women's 1500m race,
Devon Bortfeld placed third with a time of 4 minutes 28.99 seconds with Vallery Korir fifth in a time of 4:32.86.
Marlow Schulz was fourth in the 800m run with a time of 2:10.55.
Grace Victor's time of 2:14.08 was eighth and
Natalie Ackerley ran a PR time of 2:14.15 for ninth.
Brooks-Johnson ran the 100m hurdles in a time of 14.56 (10th) with
Lindsey Schauble's time of 15.03 (13th) just off her PR time of 15.00. Schauble came back to win her heat and be fourth overall in the 400m hurdles in a PR time of 1:03.46 while
Stephanie Cho took fifth with a time of 1:05.29.
Ja'Maun Charles (sophomore, Pleasanton, Calif.) finished second in the 100m dash with a wind-aided PR time of 10.43.
Zach Smith took seventh in a time of 10.72 with
Ethan Gardner 10th in 10.93 and
Jamal Brinkley 16th in a time of 11.19.
Matthew Swanson ran a PR time of 48.21 for fourth place in the 400m dash with
Corey Allen 12th in a time of 50.09.
Paul Ryan clocked in an 800m time of 1:52.73 for second place with
Reid Muller's time of 1:53.86 seventh,
Justin Janke's time of 1:55.21 10th and
Nathan Tadesse's 1:55.58 11th.
Chandler Teigen placed third in the men's 1500m race with a time of 3:51.50 with
Kyler Little fifth with a PR time of 3:57.58,
Nathan Wadhwani sixth in 3:59.80 and
Kennan Schrag seventh in a time of 4:0031.
Freshman
Sam Brixey (Boise, Idaho) was the runner-up in the 110m hurdles with a collegiate debut time of 14.37. Fellow frosh
Nick Johnson took fifth with a time of 14.78 with
Abu Kamara's time of 14.91 seventh and
Christapherson Grant eighth in a time of 14.96. Later in the day, Brixey was the top Cougar in the 200m dash at 12th in a time of 22.03 with Gardner 13th in 22.21. Smith's 22.34 was 17th,
Corey Allen's 22.65 was 21st and Brinkley's 22.99 was 22nd.
In other field events Saturday,
Greer Alsop was the triple jump runner-up with a mark of 41-5 (12.62m) and
Kiana Davis was third after leaping 40-11 (12.47m).
Lateah Holmes was the runner-up in the women's high jump after clearing 5-8 (1.73m) and Brooks-Johnson took fourth with a leap of 5-6 (1.68m). Newman placed sixth in the long jump with a leap of 18-2 1/2 (5.55m) with Schauble's mark of 17-2 (5.23m) 12th.
Chrisshnay Brown was eighth in the women's shot put with a mark of 37-10 (11.53m).
On the men's side, Josh Schulz long jumped 21-0 (6.40m) for 15th and
Robby Flores reached a PR distance of 19-7 1/2 (5.98m) for 19th. Flores also placed seventh in the triple jump after leaping 45-5 1/4 (13.85m).
Troy Gingerich was ninth in the pole vault after clearing 15-5 (4.70m) and
Dino Dodig's best bar of 15-1 (4.60m) was 11th place.
At the Whitworth Buc Scoring meet Saturday in Spokane,
Amani Brown (redshirt sophomore, Des Moines, Wash.) won the men's hammer throw with a PR mark of 180-7 (55.05m).
The next meet for the Cougars track and field competitors is the Whitworth University Sam Adams Classic March 23-24, in Spokane.
