Dartmouth Closes out 5-2 win over Cougars

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Dartmouth College captured two three-set victories to get past Washington State, 5-2, in the championship match of the Courtside Classic, hosted by Minnesota, Sunday at the Baseline Tennis Club.

Dartmouth started fast in doubles and captured the opening point. At No. 1, the Cougar duo of Barbora Michalkova and Guzal Yusupova never got going as Dartmouth's Taylor Ng and Kristina Mathis cruised to a 6-0 victory. At No. 3 Dartmouth's Lexxi Kiven and Jacqueline Crawford rode an early break of serve to a 6-3 win over Victoria Matejevic and Melisa Ates, clinching the doubles point. At No. 2, WSU's Aneta Miksovska and Lejla Colic were up 5-4 over Julie Schroeder and Racquel Lyn when the match was stopped.

In singles play, the Big Green quickly extended its lead to 2-0 as Crawford won the first set against Yusupova, 6-2 at No. 2, after which Yusupova was forced to retiree due to injury. The Cougars cut the lead in half as Matejevic posted a straight-set, 6-1, 7-5 win over Schroeder at No. 3.

Dartmouth's Chuyang Guan extended the lead to 3-1 with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Ege Tomey at No. 6. The remaining three matches all were in the third set, with WSU having won the first set in two of them. At No. 1, Michalkova captured the first 7-6, but could not hold on as Ng rebounded for a 6-7, 6-1, 6-3 win, clinching the victory.

The remaining two matches were split as Miksovska defeated Mathis, 2-6, 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 4 while Lyn captured a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 win over WSU's Ates at No. 5.

The Cougars, 6-2 this season, are off next week before returning to the court February 18 against Kansas State in Denton, Texas.
