THIS WEEK
The Washington State swim team travels to Federal Way, Wash., to compete in the Pac-12 Championships...the events will take place in the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center...action begins on Wednesday Feb. 22 and will continue through Saturday Feb. 25...the events will be all day…last year, the Cougars finished seventh at the Pac-12 Championships for the first time since the 2010-11 season.

LAST TIME IN THE WATER
The Cougars recorded top times in 11 of the 14 events and sophomore
Jasmine Margetts led the way with three wins en route to WSU's 151-111 victory over the Utes at Gibb Pool Saturday...the win marked the third-consecutive victory over the Utes...Margetts continued her impressive sophomore campaign by contributing a meet-high 27 points...the Torrance, Calif., native took first place in the 400 IM clocking a time of 4:19.05, good for an NCAA 'B' Standard mark...she also logged first-place finishes in the 200 back (2:00.03) and the 100 back (55.88)...the Cougars started the meet off  strong, securing the top spot and 11 points in the 200 medley relay…the team of
Hannah Bruggman, Angela Mavrantza,
Anna Brolin and
Addisynn Bursch clocked a time of 1:43.21 for the victory...Washington State built upon its lead in the 1000 free sweeping the competition…senior
Kendra Griffin touched the wall in 10:23.07, ahead of freshman
Ryan Falk (10:26.32) and
Jessica Marston (10:36.23)...with four events remaining and WSU leading 97-91, Falk recorded her fifth win of the season with an impressive performance in the 500 free, clocking a time of 4:58.96 and junior
Rachel Thompson took third with a 5:01.68...the Cougars followed by sweeping the top three spots in the 100 fly, pulling away for good...Brolin clocked a first-place time of 56.08, followed by senior
Elise Locke who finished 56.54 and senior
Haley Rose Love touched the wall in 56.97...Bursch added a victory in the 200 free with a time of 1:51.83 while Mavrantza recorded her seventh victory of the season, finishing in first in the 100 breast with a 1:03.34...Bruggman added 13 points to the Cougars' total...She took first in the 50 free with a time of 23.87 and finished second in the 100 free, touching the wall in 51.87...the Cougars finished the dual with a victory in 400 free relay…the team of Bruggman, Thompson, Bursch and Love juts out-touched Utah's 'A' relay team to notch the win touching in 3:26.25...with Saturday's victory, the Cougars closed the regular season 4-3 in dual meets.

COUGAR SWIMMING EARNS CSCAA SCHOLAR ALL-AMERICA HONORS
The Washington State swimming team has been recognized as a College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Team for exemplary academic performance during the fall 2016 semester...the Cougars earned a 3.43 team GPA last semester to earn the reward, the second-highest in the Pac-12...during the fall semester, 15 student-athletes earned over a 3.00 GPA...additionally, 15 swimmers were named to the WSU Athletics All-Academic Team for achieving over a 3.00 GPA for the spring and fall 2016 semesters...a record 638 teams, representing 394 institutions, earned the honor...in total, 73 percent of all CSCAA member programs posted GPA's above 3.00, with 91 percent of Division I women's teams meeting the mark...to qualify for the award, a team must have achieved a cumulative team grade point average of 3.00 or higher during the fall 2016 semester.

WSU SWIMMING TRAINED IN FLORIDA DURING WINTER BREAK
The Washington State swim team took a break from the cold Pullman weather and traveled south to Delray Beach, Fla., to train for 10 days over winter break...the team started every day with calisthenics on the beach, followed by a pair of two hour training sessions in the pool, with a break in between...the athletes also spent two hours a day in the weight room building strength and embarked on open water ocean swims to increase endurance...the trip marked the fourth-consecutive year the WSU swim team trained in Florida over winter break.
COUGAR SWIMMING INKS SEVEN TO NATIONAL LETTERS OF INTENT
Seven incoming student-athletes signed National Letters of Intent to the Washington State swimming team, head coach
Tom Jager announced last week…the 2017 signing class is comprised of Taylor McCoy (Pullman, Wash.), Maia Petrides (Honolulu, Hawaii), Chloe Larson (Rapid City, SD), Alba Fores (Lund, Sweden), Sam Howell (Austin, Texas), Kelly Morgan (Edmonds, Wash.) and Emily Cook (Portland, Ore.)…"We are very excited about this recruiting class," Jager said. "They are athletic, fast, smart and each and every one of them is a great person. This class will help us further climb in the Pac-12. I can't wait to coach them and be a part of their success."

MAKING HISTORY
Washington State's 143-119 defeat over No. 23 UCLA marked the first win over the Bruins in school history…the meet was the 11th dual meet against UCLA in program history…the Cougars claimed 10 of the 14 events against the Bruins.

FRESHMEN CONTINUE TO IMPRESS
Freshman Angela Mavrantza recorded her seventh win of the season with an impressive performance in the 100 breast against Utah, clocking a 1:03.34...against Oregon State, she dominated in the100 breast (1:04.61) and the 200 breast (2:20.11)…at the Ohio State Invite, she finished 14th, with a personal-best 2:15.29, the sixth-fastest time in school history and good for an NCAA 'B' Standard time…she notched her fourth win of the season with an impressive performance in the 200 breast, touching the wall in 2:19.81 against the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks…the Athens, Greece, native's pervious three victories came in the 100 Breast against USC, California and UCLA…fellow freshman
Ryan Falk continued her impressive freshman campaign against Utah, taking first in the 500 free with a 4:58.96...at the Ohio State Invite, she placed 36th in the 500 free with a time of 4:53.60, good for the ninth-fastest time in school history and a personal best time…she then touched the wall 23rd at 17:03.84, the tenth-fastest time in school history in the 1650 free…she contributed 18 points to the Cougars' total against Northern Arizona…the Portland, Ore., native took first place in the 1000 free with a time of 10:20.76, and later added a first place finish in the 500 free touching the wall in 5:00.02...the wins marked Falk's third and fourth victories of the season…her previous two victories came in the 200 free and 500 free against UCLA.
HEAD COACH TOM JAGER TO THE PAC-12 MEN'S ALL-CENTURY TEAM

Tom Jager was named to the Pac-12 Men's Swimming Olympic Sports All-Century Team...Jager was inducted for his excellence in freestyle sprints in Pac-12 Swimming at UCLA in 1984-87...he earned five individual NCAA championships and one relay championship...individually, Jager won two NCAA titles in the 100-yard freestyle in the 1983 and 1984, two in the 50-yard freestyle in 1984 and 1985 and one in the 100-yard backstroke in 1985...in 1984, he was named the Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year and later earned two Olympic Gold Medals as a member of relay teams...a panel of 20 coaches, swimmers, administrators and members of the media selected the team consisting of 26 swimmers and six divers, plus a Coach, and Swimmer & Diver of the Century...after college, Jager added two more Olympic Gold medals from relays and a silver medal in the 50-meter freestyle in the 1988 Olympic Games...he closed out his Olympic career in 1992 with a gold medal in the 4x100 freestyle relay and a bronze medal in the 50-meter freestyle.
LAST SEASON
The Cougars finished last year seventh in a tightly contested Pac-12...WSU notched eight dual meet victories last season, including wins over Arizona State, Oregon State, Nebraska and Utah...the Cougars won six-straight dual meets to close out the season for the second-consecutive year...Washington State earned 65 individual wins during the course of the season...WSU broke four school records last season, across four events and recorded 33 WSU top-10 performances.
