PULLMAN, Wash. – Seven incoming student-athletes signed National Letters of Intent to the Washington State swimming team, head coach
Tom Jager announced earlier this week.
"This year's class is the most athletic and physical recruiting classes that we have put together at WSU," head coach
Tom Jager said. "It is important to be a great athlete to compete in the Pac-12 Conference and I think these young women will compete at the highest level."
Sophia Balmaceda is out of American High School in Fremont, Calif., and is a member of the Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics club. During her sophomore campaign, she placed fifth in the 100 fly at the California CIF North Coast Section Championships. As a junior, Balmaceda placed third in the 100 fly and fifth in the 100 back at the California CIF North Coast Section Championships. In 2017, she was named to the NISCA All-America team.
Emily Barrier is out of Fort Collins, Colo., where she attended Rocky Mountain High School and was a member of Team Vortex. As a junior, she competed in the Speed Champions Series in Iowa City. She placed sixth in the 50 Free at the 2017 USA Swimming Futures Championships in Austin.
Payton Bokowy is a four-year letter winner and two-year captain at Sandpoint High School in Sandpoint, Idaho. She is a three-time state title holder in both the 50 and 100 Free. As a freshman, Bokowy broke the school records in both the 50 and 100 free, and helped her team win their first state title. As a sophomore, she set school records in the 50 and 100 free, again; and was named the North Idaho Hall of Fame Female Swimmer of the Year. As a junior, Bokowy again broke the school records in the 100 back, 100 fly, 50 free, and 100 free. She was also named a Scholastic All-American. Her final year as Sandpoint HS, she broke the school record in the 200 IM, 50 free, and 100 free; and was named the most valuable player.
Keiana Fountaine is out of Kimball High School in Tracy, Calif., and is a member of California Gold swimming club. As a freshman and sophomore, Fountaine was named MVP of her team and received All League honors. As a junior, she was named captain of her team and awarded MVP and All League honors. As a senior, she was captain and MVP of her team, while earning All League honors. Fountaine holds six individual school records and is a member of three relay school records.
Paige Gardner is out of Walla Walla High School in Walla Walla, Wash., and is a member of the Walla Walla Swim Club. As a junior, Gardner placed in the Top-10 in four different events at the Washington Girls 4A State Championships, taking home a third place finish in the 50 free. As a senior, she placed third in the 100 free at the 2017 Speedo Sectionals. Gardner also competed in the 50 free and 100 back at the event and also took fifth in the 50 free at the 2017 PN Washington Open.
Hailey Hyde is a mid-distance swimmer from Bend Senior High School in Bend, Ore., and is a member of Bend Swim Club. As a sophomore, Hyde placed second in the 500 free and third in the 200 free at the Oregon 1A-4A State Championships. Hyde also took seventh at the Western Senior Zones Championships in the 400 free. As a junior, she placed second in the 500 free and third in the 200 free at the Oregon 5A State Championships.
Olivia Tungate is out of Oak Harbor High School in Oak Harbor, Wash., and is a member of the King Aquatic Club and North Whidbey Aquatic Club. As a sophomore, she placed first in the 200 back at the PN Washington State Senior SC Championships. Tungate also took fourth in the 200 fly, and fifth in the 200 free and 100 back at the event. As a junior, Tungate was named a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American.
