Seventh Annual Burnaby Lake Small Boat Invitational: The seventh annual Burnaby Lake Small Boat Invitational, hosted by the Burnaby Lake Rowing Club, will take place on Burnaby Lake at Burnaby, British Columbia...it is a time-trial competition, in which teams will race the clock…the four-kilometer head race features one 180-degree turn…the top six fastest finishers, men and women, in each boat class will vie for the title of Regatta Champion in a 250-meter sprint, which takes place in front of the rowing club's old grandstands.
WSU Head Coach
Jane LaRiviere on the team mentality for the Burnaby Lake Small Boat Invitational: "We are a bit younger, so we are going to have some kids rowing in a pair for the first time. This course is difficult as it has a 180 degree turn in it. It's unusual to race full boar 2,000 meters then slam the brakes on, and turn your boat all the way around to take off again. It's a completely different style of racing."
Coach LaRiviere on Fall Training: "We have a completely new profile this year, we're very young but have a lot of talent. It's going to be a matter of getting a lot of strokes, blending the techniques of our athletes from New Zealand, Germany, Canada, and the United States. We have to spend more time together, and understand what it means to be a Cougar rower."
Coaching Staff:
Jane LaRiviere begins her 16th year as head coach of the WSU women's rowing program...as a team, the Cougars have raced in 11 NCAA Championships under LaRiviere...she is joined by associate head coach
Karl Huhta, assistant/novice coach
Brandon Campbell and assistant coach
Sarah Monn...Huhta is in his fourth year with the Cougars, and first year as associate head coach… Campbell is entering his third year, after spending his last two as a graduate assistant… Monn comes in for her first year with the Cougars.
Next up for the Cougars: Washington State will return to the water for fall competition with its larger crews and coxswains, Saturday, Oct. 14 at the Head of the Spokane, hosted by Gonzaga.
