Cougars Conclude Trip with 4-0 win at Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Washington State had little trouble with Indiana Sunday morning, taking three singles matches in straight sets to clinch a 4-0 victory at the UI Tennis Center.

The Cougars (5-1) jumped out quickly in doubles, capturing early breaks in all three matches. At No. 3 Melisa Ates and Victoria Matejevic finished first with a 6-1 win over Indiana's (2-1) Paula Gutierrez and Pauline Jahren. Aneta Miksovska and Lejla Colic quickly followed that with a 6-1 win of their own to clinch the doubles point. The Cougar duo defeated Caitlin Bernard and Alicia Robinson at No. 2. At No. 1, W SU's Barbora Michalkova and Guzal Yusupova were on serve at 3-4 against Madison Appel and Kim Schmider when the match was stopped.

In singles play Ates quickly moved the Cougar lead to 2-0 as she had little trouble with Robinson, winning 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5. It marked Ates' team-leading 16th singles win of the season. Yusupova also cruised in straight sets, defeating Gutierrez 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2.

Freshman Ege Tomey clinched the team victory for WSU as she posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jahren at No. 6. The remaining three matches were abandoned with WSU leading in two of them. Michalkova was up 6-4, 4-5 at No. 1 against Appel. Matejevic was trailing 5-7, 2-2 at No. 3 while Miksovska had won a first-set tiebreaker and was leading 7-6.

The Cougars return to the court Saturday when they complete in the four-team Courtside Classic, hosted by Minnesota. WSU faces DePaul at 8 a.m. PT.
