Cougars Tally Seven Wins, a Dozen PRs at WSU Open

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Sam Brixey, a freshman on the Washington State track and field team, made his Pullman collegiate debut a memorable one, breaking Jeshua Anderson's school freshman indoor record Saturday at the 15th Annual WSU Open Indoor meet at the WSU Indoor Facility.
 
Brixey, from Boise, Idaho, won the men's 60m hurdles in a time of 8.00 seconds, edging Anderson's frosh school record time of 8.01, run at 2008 Vandal Indoor in Moscow. Brixey led the cadre of Cougs in the final as Abu Kamara took third place (8.19), Christapherson Grant was fourth (8.21), Nick Johnson sixth (8.32) and Ian Markham eighth (8.57).
 
The Cougars racked up seven event wins and 12 personal-bests at the open meet.
 
Ja'Maun Charles led a one-two-three finish in the men's 60m dash with a time of 6.80 followed by Zach Smith in second place with a time of 6.95 and Ethan Gardner third in 7.01.
 
Jake Callaghan won the men's shot put with a toss of 52-feet 1 inch (15.87m) and Cole Smith was the runner-up in the high jump after clearing 6-8 3/4 (2.05m) equaling his indoor best height.
 
Regyn Gaffney (sophomore, Chehalis, Wash.) won the women's 60m dash with a PR time of 7.55 with teammates Jordyn Tucker second in a time of 7.71 and Danielle Darden third in 7.80.
 
Grace Victor (redshirt freshman, Wakerley, Australia) led a one-two WSU finish in the women's 400m. Victor's time was 59.14 with Natalie Ackerley taking second in 59.97.
 
Pentathlete Liz Harper (senior, Missoula, Mont.) won the women's 60m hurdles in 8.62 and then finished fourth in the high jump (1.65m/5-5).
 
Greer Alsop (redshirt junior, Invercargill, New Zealand) won the long jump with a mark of 18-0 1/2 (5.50m) after taking second in the triple jump the night before (12.49m/40-11 3/4). McKenna Hogan was the long jump runner-up was a mark of 17-4 3/4 (5.30m).
 
Kristine Felix (redshirt senior, Wailuku, Hawai'i) led a one-two-three WSU finish in the women's pole vault after clearing the bar at 13-1 1/2 (4.00m). Katelyn Frost placed second and Molly Scharmann took third, both with bar heights of 11-9 3/4 (3.60m).
 
After winning the women's triple jump Friday night with a meet record leap of 41-0 1/2 (12.51m) Kiana Davis led a second-through-fifth place finish in the high jump. Davis and Lateah Holmes both cleared 5-7 (1.70m) with Harper was fourth after a best bar of 5-5 (1.65m) and Lindsey Schauble was fifth with a mark of 5-3 (1.60m).
 
The next competition for the majority of the WSU Track and Field teams is at the New Mexico Team Invitational, Jan. 28, in Albuquerque while some Cougars will compete at the UW Invitational in Seattle.
