PULLMAN, Wash. – Morgan Weaver scored a pair of goals and goalkeeper Ella Dederick recorded her third shutout of the season as Washington State posted a 2-0 win over Seattle Thursday in front of 926 fans at Lower Soccer Field.

The Cougar (4-2-1) took control from the start, keeping the ball on the Seattle (2-4-1) half of the field for the majority of the first 20 minutes. Weaver, a freshman from University Place, Wash., opened the scoring in the 18th minute as she drilled a shot from just outside the box that deflected off a defender and into the lower left corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.

The latter third of the half the Redhawks had the run of play, putting four shots on goal, all saved by Dederick, the sophomore from Camarillo, Calif. For the half the Cougars held a 7-5 edge in shots but relied on Dederick to keep the lead intact.

In the second half the teams went back-and-forth with the Cougar defense clearing Seattle's best chances. Looking for the clincher, the Cougars had multiple opportunities and found another goal in the 81st minute as Weaver collected a rebound off Alysha Overland's shot and beat Seattle goalkeeper Ashley Routh to the left corner of the goal for the 2-0 lead. The play began on the Cougar half of the field when Overland possessed the pass, turned and dribbled into the Seattle defense, taking defenders away from Weaver until shooting, leaving Weaver alone on the rebound.

Dederick and the Cougar defense kept the shutout alive as the Redhawks did not threaten over the final 10 minutes.

Weaver's two goals on the night give her six for the season, all coming in the past three games. The six goals also are tied for the Pac-12 Conference lead heading into action Friday. Dederick's third shutout of the season gives her eight in her Cougar career, moving her into a tie for ninth on WSU's career shutouts list with Kris Young (1991-94).

For the game the Cougars held a 12-7 advantage in shots and 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Cougars continue their three-game homestand Sunday when they host Boise State at 1 p.m. at Lower Soccer Field. The game will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.
