Men’s Golf in First Entering Final Round at Palouse Ridge
September 12, 2016 | Men's Golf
Senior Nick Mandell leads the field.
PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State University men's golf team is in first place after shooting 6-under par (562), 15 strokes ahead of second place Utah, through two rounds at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate at Palouse Ridge Golf Club, Monday.
"For the first tournament of the year, I think we did really well," WSU head coach Dustin White said. "There were moments where everyone faced some adversity, and they battled through it. They played very well both individually and as a team."
All eight members of the team competing at the tournament sit atop the top-25 after two rounds of play, led by Nick Mandell, who is competing as an individual, in first place at 137 (-5), tying his career-best two-round score. After carding nine birdies and one eagle in the first two rounds, Mandell leads three fellow WSU teammates who are tied for second place.
"You want to see everyone play well, and with Nick being a senior, I'd like for him to go out and play well," White said. "I think it speaks a lot to where his game is at. Whether they're playing with the team or competing individually, everyone's going out with the idea of 'let's play well for everyone on the team'."
Juniors Derek Bayley and Brian Mogg, along with freshman Nicklaus Chiam, all have a score of 140 (-2), and are in a three-way tie for second. Combined, the trio carded 17 birdies in the second round, and Mogg recorded an eagle on the 18th hole in the first round. Bayley shot 6-under par in the second round (65). Chiam is competing in his first tournament for the Cougars and Mogg is competing as an individual.
Sophomore AJ Armstrong finished the day tied for eighth at 1-over par (143), tallying 10 birdies through the first two rounds of play. Fellow sophomore Grant Cole is tied for 11th (+2, 144).
Junior Zach Anderson shot 3-over par through two rounds (145) and is tied for 18th. Sophomore Aaron Whalen, who is competing as an individual, finished the day tied for 21st, shooting 4-over par (146).
The tournament concludes Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Visit birdiefire.com for live results throughout the day. A full recap from the day will be posted at wsucougars.com following the end of each round.
