Overland’s Goal Clinches 1-0 Victory over No. 13 Santa Clara

PULLMAN, Wash. – Sophomore Alysha Overland's goal in the 39th minute provided the lone goal of the game as the Washington State Cougars knocked off No. 13 Santa Clara 1-0 Thursday evening in front of 1,506 fans at Lower Soccer Field.
With the win the Cougars even their early-season record at 1-1-0 while Santa Clara (2-1-0) suffered its first defeat of the season after opening 2016 with back-to-back wins over No. 11 USC and No. 18 California.
Overland's goal, the first of her Cougar career, came on a flurry of activity in front of the Bronco net late in the first half. WSU senior Kaitlyn Johnson collected the ball just outside the box near the right side, took a touch and fired a shot that struck the crossbar and rebounded downward in the middle of the penalty area. Overland was in position to head the rebound which again hit the crossbar before she followed that with another header low past Bronco goalkeeper Melissa Lowder for the goal.
In the second half the Cougar defense clear each opportunity the Broncos presented, giving goalkeeper Ella Dederick her first clean sheet of the season. Santa Clara had a few chances with just under 10 minutes remaining, the first blocked by a Cougar defender and the second off a free kick from just outside the box that Dederick went to her left to save.
Each team had 10 shots for the game while corner kicks were also even at three. Dederick collected three saves on the night while Lowder finished with two. With the win Dederick moved into a tie for seventh on WSU's all-time wins list with 15, which she also slid into eighth on the all-time saves list with 108.
The win also marked WSU's first against a Top 15 team since posting a 1-0 victory at No. 9 California, Oct. 3, 2014.
The Cougars are next in action Sunday when they travel to face Gonzaga in Spokane. Match times is set for 6 p.m.
