Cougar Swimming Hosts Northern Arizona Thursday

The Washington State University swim team hosts the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks Thursday, Nov. 3, at Gibb Pool...the meet begins at 5 p.m.
 
MAKING HISTORY
Washington State's 143-119 defeat over No. 23 UCLA marked the first win over the Bruins in school history…Saturday was the 11th dual meet against UCLA in program history…the Cougars claimed 10 of the 14 events against the Bruins.
 
HOT START FOR FRESHMEN
Freshman Ryan Falk took first place in the 200 free with a time of 1:52.29, and later added a first-place finish in the 500 free touching the wall in 4:58.36 against No. 23 UCLA…fellow freshman Angela Mavrantza notched her third win of the season with an impressive performance in the 100 breast with a 1:04.31, just ahead of UCLA's Emma Schanz…she then added a second place finish in the 200 breast touching in 2:16.90.Mavrantza impressed against California in the 100 breast clocking in at 1:04.01, just out-touching Maija Roses for the top spot...the win marks the second victory of Mavrantza's young career...the Athens, Greece, native then broke into the WSU All-Time Top 10 with a second-place finish in the 200 breast...her time of 2:16.73 put her in a tie with current teammate Addisynn Bursch for seventh on the list...fellow freshman Falk added a second-place finish in the 1000 free...her time of 10:11.26 placed her fourth on the WSU All-Time Top 10 list...Mavrantza and Falk began their WSU careers in impressive fashion against USC...Mavrantza notched her first career victory by out-touching USC's Kelsey Kafka to claim the top spot in the 100 breast with a time of 1:04.54…She then added a second-place finish in the 200 breast with a time of 2:21.23…Falk started her WSU career strong with a second-place finish in the 1000 free, clocking a time of 10:24.08, and later added another second-place finish in the 500 free touching in 5:02.37.
 
LAST TIME IN THE POOL
The Washington State swim team defeated No. 23 UCLA, 143-119, in Pac-12 swimming action at Gibb Pool…WSU started the meet strong with a win in the 200 medley relay. The team of Hannah Bruggman, Angela Mavrantza, Anna Brolin and Haley Rose Love clocked a time of 1:43.28, the fastest finish by the Cougars this season…sophomore Jasmine Margetts led the way for the Cougars with wins in the 100 back (56.67), 200 back (2:01.77) and 400 IM (4:24.16)…in total, the Torrance, Calif., native contributed 27 points to the Cougars' total to lead the team…In the 50 free, junior Bruggman took first with a time of 23.88, followed by a second place finish in the 100 free touching the wall in 51.83…Washington State also garnered first place finishes in the 200 fly and 100 fly…senior Elise Locke finished the 200 fly in 2:01.73, out-touching UCLA's Amy Okada by two seconds…Brolin, a junior, secured the top spot in the 100 fly touching the wall in 55:14…WSU closed out the meet with a strong finish in the 400 free relay…Washington State's 'A' relay team of Buggman, Love, Penny Nichols and Falk finished second with a time of 3:27.64, followed by a third place finish from WSU's 'B' relay team of Anna Rosen, Rachel Thompson, Ciera Kelly and Hailey Johnson with a 3:31.93…Nichols added four points to the Cougars' total after finishing second behind Margetts in the 100 back, touching the wall in 57.52, while Love took second in the 50 free with a time of 23.91, just behind Bruggman…senior Kendra Griffin notched two third place finishes, in the 1000 free (10:18.42) and 200 fly (2:04.24).
 
HEAD COACH TOM JAGER TO THE PAC-12 MEN'S ALL-CENTURY TEAM
Washington State University Swimming Head Coach Tom Jager was named to the Pac-12 Men's Swimming Olympic Sports All-Century Team...Jager was inducted for his excellence in freestyle sprints in Pac-12 Swimming at UCLA in 1984-87...he earned five individual NCAA championships and one relay championship...individually, Jager won two NCAA titles in the 100-yard freestyle in the 1983 and 1984, two in the 50-yard freestyle in 1984 and 1985 and one in the 100-yard backstroke in 1985...in 1984, he was named the Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year and later earned two Olympic Gold Medals as a member of relay teams...a panel of 20 coaches, swimmers, administrators and members of the media selected the team consisting of 26 swimmers and six divers, plus a Coach, and Swimmer & Diver of the Century...after college, Jager added two more Olympic Gold medals from relays and a silver medal in the 50-meter freestyle in the 1988 Olympic Games...he closed out his Olympic career in 1992 with a gold medal in the 4x100 freestyle relay and a bronze medal in the 50-meter freestyle.

LAST SEASON
The Cougars finished last year seventh in a tightly contested Pac-12...WSU notched eight dual meet victories last season, including wins over Arizona State, Oregon State, Nebraska and Utah...the Cougars won six-straight dual meets to close out the season for the second-consecutive year...Washington State earned 65 individual wins during the course of the season...WSU broke four school records last season, across four events and recorded 33 WSU top-10 performances.

COMING UP
Washington State will travel to Columbus, Ohio to compete at the Ohio State University Invitational...the invite will begin on Friday Nov. 18 and end on Sunday Nov. 20…the events will be all day.
