Finished 1968 Cougar season as nations winningest pitcher with 12 wins - a WSU record, and a 1.10 era...led team to third place finish in Pac-8 as a senior...other senior honors include Topps Chewing Gum All-American, first team Dist-8 NCAA...Pac-8 All Star, coaches Collegiate All American second team

Earned varsity football letters in 1950, 1951 and 1952 after enrolling in the fall of 1949, when he played freshman ball...first-team pick to the Pacific Coast Conference team at end in 1951 after his 864 receiving yards set the record for WSU, the PCC and the NCAA (the receiving yard record stood until it was broken by Cougar Hugh Campbell in 1960).

Unanimous selection to the All-Northern Division first team as a senior in 1955, when he averaged 16.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game...averaged 17.1 as a junior and was also All-Northern Division...holds the Cougar records for career and single season FT made...his 423 points in 1955 was a Northern Division record.

Entered WSU in 1946 after serving in the Navy...lettered two years for coach Phil Sarboe's Cougars, 1947 and 1948 and one year in basketball for Jack Friel's 1950 club...twice named to the All-conference team, 1948 as a first baseman and 1950 as an outfielder...in three seasons with Buck Bailey's Cougars he hit .329 in 41 conference games (all-game stats not available for those years).

Carl Dietz was the star of WSU's first Rose Bowl team (1915 season)...in WSU's 14-0 Rose Bowl win over Brown University, he rushed for 105 yards and one of the team's two touchdowns.

Washington State's first collegiate distance champion in sophomore season of 1925...as a junior, he won all three dual two-mile races he entered and finished third in the event at the PCC meet.

Transferred to WSU for his final two seasons...led the Pac-8 Conference in batting with a .423 average and .379 overall...the right-handed third-basemen set a team record 58 hits in 1970 (not currently in top ten).

Came to WSU as a quarterback, but a knee injury and surgery ruined football career at WSU...never able to play...returned to WSU to serve as an assistant coach for Jim Sweeney's Cougars, 1972-75.

Recorded two outstanding seasons as the ace pitcher of Bobo Brayton's 1965 and 1966 teams...set Cougar records with 13 consecutive wins over two seasons and shares school mark of 12 consecutive wins in one season...set WSU single-season strikeout record (108).

Accomplishments as a senior include Northern Division two-mile champion and second in NCAA...member of two-mile relay team as a senior that set indoor collegiate and world records (8:01.4)...considered a sure bet to make 1942 US Olympic team before the games were cancelled by war.

Won three PCI boxing titles, 1952/178 pounds (5-3 in regular season), 1954/165 pounds (13-0 record with four KOs in PCI and NCAA competition), 1955/178 pounds (9-2 overall record), and also won three NCAA titles those same years...second on WSU's PCI title list with three (Jack Melson won four).

Still stands as one of the greatest rebounders in school history...her Career totals included a school record 822 points (currently 19th on the career list), a school record .480 FG% (now 8th), a school record 13.3 average (now 6th), a school record 9.6 rebounds per game (still the record).

Gray was one of WSU's best all-around athletes in the 1970s...in 1974 she made 207 steals, the second best total in WSU history...In all she played in 77 games, scored 587 points for a 7.6 average, grabbed 296 rebounds, handed out 218 assists.

Ranked as one of WSU's all-time great sprinters and low hurdlers...he won Pacific Coast Conference sprint titles at 100 yards, 220 yards, 110 yard hurdles and 220 yard low hurdles (three times)...at one time held the national freshman record in the 100 yards at 9.5 seconds.

Three-time selection to the all-conference team as a outfielder, 1948-49-50...as a Sophomore in 1948 he hit .304...a year later as a Junior he hit .377 with six stolen bases and one home run...during Senior year (1950) he hit .364 with seven stolen bases and one home run.

Jack MelsonBoxing (1948-51)
Entered the ring under coach Ike Deeter and helped spur the Cougars to a national threat in collegiate boxing...the only WSU boxer to capture four PCI boxing titles, in addition to his 1951 NCAA title at 130 pounds...he won the 130 PCI title in 1947, the 127 title in 1948, the 125 championship in 1949 and the 130 title again in 1951, followed by his NCAA crown.

Considered one of the nation's all-time great passers and one of the best ever at WSU...set 12 individual passing and total offense records at WSU...career totals included 246 completions in 437 attempts with 27 interceptions for 3,172 yards and 27 touchdowns (school records for attempts, completions, yards and touchdowns).

A member of WSU's ski team in the fall of 1978 and 1979...Junior year in 1978 finished ninth in cross country at the regionals and 50th at the nationals in cross-country relay...Senior year won cross country titles at WSU Invitational, EOSC Invitational and Reno-Nevada Invitational.

The captain of the men's track team...won the 1968 NCAA javelin title...holds the WSU freshman indoor record of 228-10 in the javelin set in 1965...set American indoor record of 250-feet in the javelin...in June 1968, set a career and school best throw of 258-11 to win the javelin at the NCAA championships...the Cougars finished second in the NCAA meet, losing to USC 58-57.

Richard Rall

Had a 40-2 record in four years of boxing for the Cougars...was successful in a multitude of tournaments, winning the 1956 Intermountain Collegiate and PCC titles and finishing third in the Olympics...in 1957 finished second in the PCC but came back to win an NCAA title...in 1958 he won the NCAA title, the Intermountain title and the PCC crown.

One of two WSU runners to make U.S. team in 1972...1970 co-winner of Gerry Lindgren Inspirational Award and Kimball Memorial Scholarship for spring semester 1970...as a junior he finished second in NCAA 880 meter, eclipsing the existing American record and setting a school record of 1:46.1...set American and collegiate records in 600 meter and 660 yard events as a sophomore.

Guided the Cougar track fortunes from 1927 through 1940 while posting a 39-14 dual meet record (.736)...had four undefeated seasons (1933, '34, '37, '39)...his teams won seven consecutive Northern Division titles...among the Cougar greats he coached at WSU were Lee and Jack Orr, Loren Benke, Dixie Garner, Paul Siwft, Larry Nettleton.

In 1931 he equaled a world record in the 100 yard dash at 9.5 seconds...between his high school senior year and enrolling at WSU he suffered a summer job injury (base vertebra dislocation) that limited his future athletic success at WSU, even though he continued to be a record setter.

Considered the father of high school wrestling in this state, his Cougar teams took five NCAA titles and 21 individual conference championships...his Cougar teams compiled a 48-8 dual meet record including 24 straight dual meet victories...founded Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (1950) and served as its president.

As a Senior she was second on the team in scoring, 13.7 points, and in rebounds, 6.0, to go with 57 assists and 57 steals...among her Career rankings were 794 points (8th in 1986), 162 free throws (5th in 1986) and 395 rebounds (10th in 1986).

Joanne Washburn

Joanne WashburnAdministrator (1965-2005)
Joined the WSU staff in 1965 and during her long 38-year career served as the women's athletic director 1965-82...in 1993 she became an associate professor in the department of educational leadership and counseling psychology, retiring in 2005. From 1965 to 1982, the WSU women's athletic program grew to 12 teams and included 8 sports - volleyball, basketball, field hockey, skiing, tennis, track & field, gymnastics, and swimming. The budget grew from a mere $2,000 to more than $lM.
