Baseball

Washington State second baseman Bookie Gates was named to the All-Pacific-10 Conference first team and six of his teammates received honorable mention recognition from the Pac-10 coaches.

Gates, a senior, ended his final season hitting .362. The infielder from Garfield High in Seattle was WSU's third leading hitter and ranked second in hits (68). In addition, he was third with 89 total bases, a .407 on-base percentage, 38 runs-batted-in and 219 total plate appearances. He led WSU with 14 stolen bases and eight sacrifice flies and tied for the team lead with three triples.

Gates finished his Cougar career ranked in seven all-time categories, including seventh with 232 hits and eighth with 208 games played. His 567 career assists ranks third, while he is ninth with 147 runs-batted-in and fourth with 758 at-bats. He also is fourth with 63 errors and sixth with 125 strikeouts.

Gates, from 1999-02, hit .306 while starting in all but 10 of his 204 games played. Honorable mention honors went to Cougar pitchers Eddie Bonine and Brandon Hundt, shortstop Derek Bruce, third baseman Jeff LaRue and outfielders Evan Hecker and Justin Hart.

Women's Track & Field

Whitney Evans won the high jump at the NCAA West Regional Track & Field Meet at Cobb Track and Angell Field on the Stanford campus.

Evans, a seven-time All-American and senior from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, earned a ticket to her fourth outdoor national championship after winning the high jump by clearing the bar at 5-10 1/2 (1.79m) and edging out Kaylene Wagner from Cal Poly and Sheena Gordon from UCLA on fewer attempts.

Evan made the most of her fourth national championship trip, winning the NCAA High Jump championship two weeks later.
