Week of February 11 - February 17

Men's Basketball
Feb. 13, 1965

Eight days after losing to UCLA at Westwood by 52 points, Ted Werner pulled down a then school record 24 rebounds (still second best in WSU history) as the Cougars nearly upset the No. 2 ranked Bruins, 70-68, before a capacity crowd of 5,137 at Bohler Gym.

The Cougars were down 44-35 at the half, but rallied to take a 64-61 lead with 4:40 to play. WSU missed its next five shots and UCLA was able to take advantage of the Cougars' cold stretch and regain the lead.

WSU had one last chance to tie with two seconds left, but Dennis Kloke's desperation heave beyond half court clipped the rim, hit the backboard, and fell harmlessly to the Bohler Gym floor.

The '65 edition of the Bruins would go on to capture the national championship, marking the second of head coach John Wooden's 10 national titles at UCLA.

Women's Basketball
Feb. 15, 2001

Joanna Smith's put back off a Kelley Berglund miss with five-tenths of a second left in the game gave the Cougars a remarkable 77-76 win over the Oregon Ducks at McArthur Court.

The winning margin for the Cougars turned out to be the team's only lead of the game. It capped a 16-point comeback by WSU, the second largest comeback in the history of the program.

It was the first time WSU swept a Pac-10 opponent since the 1997-98 season when the Cougars defeated California twice. The win snapped an 18-game Pac-10 road-losing streak that dated back to the 1998-99 season.

Men's Basketball
Feb. 17, 1994

The headline on the front page of the Feb. 18 Spokesman-Review sports section read: "Cougars humiliate Beavers."

WSU scored the game's first eight points, en route to sprinting out to a 19-2 lead eight minutes in the game and cruised to a 101-64 win over Oregon State at Beasley Coliseum.

Eddie Hill led 10 Cougars who made a dent on the scoreboard with 22 points.

The 101 points marked the first time WSU scored over the century mark in just over two years. In addition, the 37-point margin of victory was the largest over a Pac-10 opponent in school history.
