Football Sept. 27, 1980 The Cougars notched their first win of the year by jumping out to a 14-0 lead and never looking back to defeat Army 31-18 at Martin Stadium. WSU accumulated 489 total yards against the Cadets, including 363 yards rushing. Tim Harris led a contingent of nine WSU players who gained rushing yards with 83 of his own. It was only the third all-time meeting between the two schools. Army shutout WSU 23-0 at West Point in 1963, and in 1978 the two teams battled to a 21-21 tie in a game that also took place at West Point.
Soccer Washington State's leading scorer Amy Chippendale scored the game-winning goal and added an assist as the Cougars defeated Air Force, 3-1, in a women's soccer match at Missoula, Mont. Senior forward Tina Walsh took a touch pass from Chippendale in the 32nd minute and scored her first goal of the year, giving the Cougars a 1-0 halftime lead. Chippendale scored the Cougars' second goal in the 49th minute from 11 yards out. Through seven matches Chippendale tallied three goals. Karli Silveira completed the Cougar scoring in the 79th minute with a goal from six yards out.
