May 3, 1975 Washington State held off an Oregon State rally to defeat the Beavers 11-8 in Corvallis. The Cougars held an 11-3 lead heading into the eighth inning; however, five Oregon State runs in the inning made things interesting, but in the end the Cougars took the win. The Cougars amassed 12 hits, 11 of them singles. WSU, which improved to 9-4, was aided by five Oregon State errors. Bill Simpson drove in three runs for the Cougars.
May 4, 1963 On the same day that Chateaugay captured the Kentucky Derby, Washington State and Washington provided a photo finish of their own at a dual meet in rainy Seattle. With WSU behind 71-69 heading into the day’s final event, the mile relay, the quartet of Jim Allen, Jan Bentzon, Clarence Williams and John Chaplin captured the win with a time of 3:19.1, nearly three seconds better than the Huskies’ 3:22.3. The victory propelled WSU to a 74-71 triumph over its intrastate rival. WSU was also aided by a pair of victories from John Valiant, who won the mile in 4:24.6 and the two-mile with a time of 9:18.
