WSU Athletics to Participate in National Hazing Prevention Week Activities

Sept. 20, 2010

PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State University Athletic Department and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) are participating in National Hazing Prevention Week activities, Sept. 20-26, at the WSU campus.

National Hazing Prevention Week is observed on campuses and within organizations each year during the last week of September. The purpose of the week is to bring attention to the problem of hazing locally and to prevent hazing from happening in the first place. In addition, the week's activities are designed to educate parents, faculty and staff, students, community members, local and campus police and others so they can more easily recognize hazing - and more importantly - have the skills to intervene, when hazing occurs.

"The WSU Athletic Department recognizes the problem of hazing among students and is fully participating in National Hazing Prevention Week activities to call attention to this issue," Senior Associate Director of Athletics Bob Minnix said.

Among the activities WSU Athletics staff and student-athletes are participating in is the "Walk of Remembrance," Thursday at 6 p.m., and the "Leading in the 21st Century" event with nationally renowned speaker Will Keim at Beasley Coliseum, Sunday at 6 p.m.

The "Walk of Remembrance" is a silent march to honor the victim of hazing. It begins at the Bonfire Pit adjacent to Mooberry Track and across the street from Streit-Perham Hall on the WSU campus.

Following are the week-long activities calling attention to the hazing issue that affect students on every campus throughout the country. All events are open and free to the public.
