A Decade of Excellence: 2001-02
The Cougars record a 52nd place finish with 345 points, the best in school history, out of 261 scoring institutions in the Sears Directors' Cup. Football defeats Purdue 33-27 in the Sun Bowl to earn first bowl win since 1994; finishes season 10-2. For the eighth time in the past 11 years, volleyball earns an NCAA Tournament berth. Oscar Franco-Parra and Everlyne Lagat represent Cougars at NCAA Cross Country Championships; Lagat finishes 30th and Franco-Parra 61st. Lagat becomes 2nd WSU woman to earn All-America honors in cross-country.
Rachel Dong and Andree-Anne LeRoy compete at NCAA Swim Championships. Varsity eight crew earns an at-large berth to the NCAA Championships, marking the first time in six years the rowing program was represented at the national championships. Women's golf earns team berth to NCAA West Regional. For the first time in program history, men's golf competes in NCAA postseason play at the NCAA West Regional. Walt Williams named Pac-10 Coach of the Year. Tennis earns second straight at-large NCAA Championships bid and fourth in the last five years; Erica Perkins earns third straight singles championships bid. Anson Henry named Pac-10 Track & Field Athlete of the Year. Led by second place finishes of Whitney Evans (high jump) and Ellannee Richardson (heptathlon) women's track finishes 15th at NCAA Championships.
