Cougars Named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars
May 16, 2006 PULLMAN, Wash. - Ten student-athletes from Washington State University were selected as Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars for 2006. The names and photographs of all this year's Sports Scholars are included in the April 6 issue of Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine. First team honorees were Kevin Chen (men's golf) and Gwen Davis (volleyball). Second team honors were awarded to Shaye Harrel and Jessica Martinez, who are both members of Cougars women's soccer team. Third team honors were accorded to Jed Collins (football), Angela Fajardo (women's soccer), Nicole McClendon (track & field), and Kelly Ramirez (track & field). Carmen Anderson (women's soccer) and Tamara Diles (track & field), were fourth team selections. Since 1992, Diverse: Issues in Education has honored student-athletes who exemplify the standards set by tennis great Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must meet the selection criteria by competing in an intercollegiate sport, maintaining a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2, and be active on their campuses or in their communities.
