June Daugherty: Good morning Coug fans. I'm so excited with tip-off right around the corner to visit with you today and share Cougar Basketball thoughts. |
| Moderator: Okay, let's get started. |
| Cougar Lance (Olympia): Coach D, wondering about recruiting over here on the westside. Are you still targeting Western WA's best or looking more nationally? |
June Daugherty: Hi Lance, thanks for the question about recruiting. The search process for recruiting is going very well, instate, nationally and internationally. Our priority is and always will be our in-state products in the great state of Washington. There is quite a bit of outstanding talent in our state. |
| Ron (Centralia): Hi Coach, what are your thoughts on the new Pac-12 Network and how it can help your exposure/program? |
June Daugherty: Ron, 72 hours ago I had the privilege of being in the Pac-12 studios in San Francisco and it is impressive! The state-of-the-art facility is the best in the country. I can't tell you how proud I am to know that 50 percent of the production will be Pac-12 women's sports. The commitment to showcase our championship programs from both the men's and women's side is second to none in the country. The exposure to have 61 women's games is an outstanding opportunity to attract recruits across the country and showcase our outstanding coaches and players in the Pac-12. |
| John (seattle): Good luck this season coach. Not to give anything away to opponents until you play them but are you changing anything in you offensive or defensive schemes this year to take advantage of the strengths of this year's team? |
June Daugherty: Good morning John and thanks for the good luck wishes. Practices have been going well. I think one of the changes you will notice the most from this highly-talented group of skilled players is more offensive firepower at every position. Defensively, we are polishing up our pressing and our ability to disrupt opponent's offensive schemes. |
| Caitlyn (Seattle): Hi Coach, congrats on a great finish to last season. How excited are you for the conference tournament to be in Seattle this season? |
June Daugherty: Hello Caitlyn and thank you for complimenting us for our 3rd place finish in the Pac-12 Tournament last year. We are very much looking forward to building on that 3rd place finish every day in practice and the confidence level has never been higher for a successful women's basketball season for the Cougs. Having the WNBA's Seattle Storm host the Pac-12 Tournament at KeyArena will be by far the best conference postseason tournament in the country. The women's basketball fans in the Northwest are the best in the nation and we can't wait to come and play in front of our Cougar fans in Seattle. |
| Clayton (LA): Coach, I saw you were able to get Alexas from Mater Dei. She was a very important and tough player for us. How is she doing up there? |
June Daugherty: Hi Clayton. Thanks for your question. Alexas is doing outstanding playing the combo positions for us at the point and off guard spots. She brings a winning mentality and a confidence level at that position. She is an outstanding defender and very vocal leader. We're proud to have her wearing Crimson and Gray. |
| Allison (Yakima): HI COACH DAUGHERTY!
Any nonconference games have you excited? |
June Daugherty: Hi Allison. Thanks for the great question. We have challenged ourselves once again on the national stage to play the best competition possible preseason, in order to prepare for the Pac-12 Conference. We're proud to be invited to the Minnesota Tournament and play Louisville, Fresno State and Gonzaga on the road, just to name a few. I can't wait to come home and face BYU on Apple Cup Weekend and my alma mater, The Ohio State University, on Dec. 15. |
| Marc (Pullman): With April, Rosie, and Jaz graduating, who is this season's emotional leader on and off the court? |
June Daugherty: Marc, I am really proud of all three seniors you mentioned as well as Rosetta Adzasu for graduating with their diplomas from Washington State in four years. The leadership will come from a variety of individuals from our program. Obviously, you have to look to our seniors with Katie Grad, Carly Noyes and Ireti Amojo taking the lead in that department in practice. I also feel like we have a strong core of underclassmen who can provide that strong leadership at any time. |
| Bryan in Pullman: Whats your take on Twitter? |
June Daugherty: Bryan, Twitter can be a fun and useful tool to follow the Cougs and everyone else. I hope you're on my Twitter account (@CoachJuneD), the women's hoops account (@WSUWomensHoops) and the main athletics page (@WSUCougars_com). It's a wonderful way to communicate with our fans and recruits across the country. With so much going on in WSU Athletics it's a great way to communicate with fans. |
| Stanley (Pullman): Coach, let's beat the Huskies this year and end the streak. Whatta you say? |
June Daugherty: Stanley, sounds good to me. I hope you and all the fans are in Beasley with us every step of the way. We play in Seattle Jan. 15 and let's pack Beasley Jan. 20 against UW as it is a nationally TV game. So circle those dates! We need to put a lot of people in the stands in Seattle and Pullman and enjoy breaking the streak together. |
| Moderator: Okay, that's all the time we have. June, thank you for joining us once again. |
June Daugherty: Thank you for all your questions. The student-athletes are working extremely hard. We are improving every day. They are an outstanding group of individuals who are an absolute pleasure to coach every day. I look forward to you as fans to see us build off our third place finish in the conference tournament last year. Go Cougs! |
